Dean M. Snyder

Tube worker, Army vet was lifelong area resident

— Dean M. Snyder, 73, of 24 St. Glory Road, Hempfield Township, passed away Friday, Sept. 13, 2013, in his home after a four-month battle with cancer.

He was born May 20, 1940, in Grove City, a son of Ralph E. and Ruth E. Snyder. On Aug. 15, 1964, he married Jacqueline Callahan, who survives at home.

He lived his entire life in Greenville, where he was a 1958 graduate of Penn High School. He served in the U.S. Army and retired in 2003 from Salem Tube Corp.

He loved sports, especially basketball and baseball. He played in the first organized Little League in Greenville in 1952 and continued to play baseball and softball for many years.

He also served as a softball umpire in the area. He had many ballgame stories to tell, but his favorite was about the game he played against Eddie Feigner’s King and his Court at Packard Park in 1964. He was a lifelong Cleveland Indians and Browns Fan.

Dean was well known in the area for his growing and selling of fine produce, especially sweet corn. He was a member of Benevolent Protective Order of Elks Lodge 145, Greenville, and St. John’s Lutheran Church, where he attended regularly and worked on the property committee.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Todd Snyder and his wife Paula, and Ryan Snyder and his wife Erin; four grandchildren whom he adored, Sarah, Jocelyn, Gracie, and Jack, all of Greenville.

He is also survived by two brothers, Robert Snyder and his wife Debbie of Largo, Fla., and Keith “Duke” Snyder and his wife Sue of Greenville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a nephew, Steven L. Snyder.
