A lifelong resident of South Keel Ridge Road in Hermitage, Mrs. Jones was born Sept. 15, 1923, in her family home that was known by most as “The Blue House.” She was one of four children born to Daniel B. and Sadie Hast Doolin.
Having finished high school with honors at the early age of 16, she was a member of Hickory High School’s graduating class of 1939. She matriculated to Slippery Rock University, where she earned her bachelor’s of science degree in education. She was quite proud that her mother had paid for her college tuition with money she had saved from sewing clothes and selling eggs from the family farm.
Mrs. Jones retired with more than 30 years of service from Hermitage School District, where she touched the lives of many students. She began teaching third grade at Hickory and for most of her career taught second-grade students. Her legacy will always live on in the district as the high school library was dedicated in honor of her and her loving husband, William A. Jones.
A charter and active member of Church of the Good Shepherd in West Middlesex, Sara served as a Eucharistic minister and lector and belonged to its Altar Rosary Society. She was the director of CCD (Confraternity of Catholic Doctrine) for 25 years; some of her favorite Christmas memories were putting on Christmas pageants throughout the years.
She was a member of Hermitage Woman’s Club and the Hermitage Historical Society.
Her husband, William A. Jones, preceded her in death May 3, 1988.
She is survived by: her daughter, Elaine M. Hough and her husband Lewis, Clark; a son, Kevin Jones and his wife Judy, Kalkaska, Mich.; three grandchildren, Colleen Hough Mraz and her husband Matthew, Pittsburgh; Megan Jones Fraas and her husband Corey, Niceville, Fla.; and Steven Hough and his wife Celeste, Cranberry Township; three great-grandsons, Samuel and Henry Hough, both Cranberry Township; and Declan Fraas, Niceville. Sara was also survived by many nieces and nephews and devoted family and friends.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Mary Reno; and two brothers, Daniel B. and Ronald Doolin.
