Mary Christine Anglin Felton

Conneaut Lake Educator of Year taught English

-----

- — A memorial service will be held Sunday for Mary Christine “Chris” Anglin Felton, a longtime resident of the Sharon/Sharpsville area. She passed away at 8:20 p.m. Nov. 30, 2013, in Shenango Presbyterian SeniorCare in New Wilmington. She was 95.

Chris was born in Chicago, on Oct. 21, 1918, the first child of George Anglin and Florence Cattron. Her beloved brother, George “Bud” Anglin was born a year later.

Following graduation from Thiel College, Greenville, in 1941 with a bachelor’s degree in English, Miss Anglin taught English and writing at both Sharpsville and Sharon High Schools. She met Robert James Felton of Sharpsville soon after and corresponded with him during World War II, where he served as an Air Corps captain, flying B-29 bombers. They married near the end of the war, in February of 1944.

Following Mr. Felton’s discharge in 1945, they moved around the country taking commercial flying jobs as they became available. Eventually, Mr. Felton joined Capitol Airlines as a commercial pilot and they settled near Pittsburgh.

Mrs. Felton was mother to David Reed Felton, born in March of 1950, and Mark Anglin Felton, born in January 1952.

Her husband left the world of commercial airlines, was employed by General Foods Corp for 10 years and eventually reunited with his co-pilot from the war, George Lang, in Meadville.

Following that move and with two growing sons, Mrs. Felton returned to teaching in Conneaut Lake, where she taught Advanced Placement English and Literature, as well as Independent Study, to juniors and seniors. She was a very popular teacher during this period and was named by Conneaut Lake High School as Educator of the Year in 1979, when the senior class dedicated their yearbook to Mrs. Felton. She remained close to many of her former students until her final years.

Mrs. Felton was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, and son, Mark. She is survived by her son David, daughter-in-law Mitsuko, and grandchildren Cattron Kai, Christopher Sakamoto and Casey Ikeuchi, all residing in California. Her brother, Bud, pre-deceased her by two years, but Mrs Felton’s nephews, George “Casey” and Christopher, continue to live in Sharpsville with their families. Mrs Felton’s two sisters-in-law, Norma Felton Nye and Marilyn Felton Hibshman also live in western Pennsylvania with their families.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Association of Teacher Educators, 11350 Random Hills Road, Suite 800, Fairfax, VA 22030.
