Donald Arden Rice

Alliance Church member taught physics at GCC

- — Donald Arden Rice, Village of Leesburg, Perry Highway, Volant, Springfield Township, passed away in Grove Manor Nursing Home, Grove City, at 2:57 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, 2013. He was 89.

Mr. Rice was born April 5, 1924, to Donald Douglas Rice and Mary Clarissa Huey Rice on the family farm in Leesburg, where he resided his entire life.  

He married Catherine “Kate” Louise Beckert Rice on June 10, 1950; she preceded him in death on Oct. 21, 2009.

Arden graduated from Mercer High School in 1941 and Grove City College in 1949. After his college graduation, he spent eight years working with his dad on the family farm.

“I wouldn’t have traded those eight years for anything” he said.

He earned a master’s degree in education from Westminster College, New Wilmington, and a master’s of science and education degree from Temple University, Philadelphia.

Arden taught at Neshannock Township Junior High School for two years; Mercer High School for four years; Union Township for one year; with the remainder and bulk of his teaching career, 28 years, at Grove City College teaching physics.

He was a member of Grove City Alliance Church.

He loved spending time with his family, working on the farm, being involved with his church and teaching young enthusiastic people.

Survivors include: two daughters, Catherine “Cathy” L. Allen and her husband, Delbert Edmond, New Castle; and Mary Elizabeth Bowlin, Freeport, Pa.; three sons, Donald J. Rice and his wife Diane, on the family farm in Volant; R. David Rice, Pasadena, Calif.; and Louis J. Rice and his wife Terry, Avon Lake, Ohio; and six grandchildren, Jennifer, Craig Allen, Jon, Louis, Blaze and Tessi Rice.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.

Calling hours: 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday (12-11-13) in SMITH FUNERAL HOME of LEESBURG, 1778 Perry Highway, Volant.

Service: 11 a.m. Thursday (12-12-13) in the funeral home, with THE Rev. Edwin Dixon, pastor of Grove City Alliance Church, presiding.

Interment: Carpenter Cemetery, Springfield Township.
