William O. Hunter

County native was analyst, WWII, Korea War vet

---- — MOUNT UNION, Pa. – William O. Hunter of Mount Union  died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2013, in his residence in Mount Union. He was 86.

Mr. Hunter was born Aug. 31, 1927, in Green Township, near Jamestown, to Wilfred O. Hunter and Margaret E Cathcart Hunter.

Mr. Hunter attended Sharpsville schools and Allied Institute of Chicago, and graduated from the School of Business of Williamsport (Pa.) Tech Institute with a major in accounting; and the Institute of Computer Management, Pittsburgh; and numerous military schools in programming languages.

Early on, he was self-employed in seasonal work and filled in the off season at local steel mills.

He was a veteran of World War II and the Army of Occupation; was recalled to the Korean conflict in October 1950; released from active duty in October 1951; and was honorably discharged in June 1953.

Being unable to return to active duty during the Vietnam conflict, he returned to the military as a civilian and worked in Directoriate, Management Information Systems, New Cumberland Army Depot, and later transferred to Fleet Material Support Office, Mechanicsburg, Pa., from which he retired as a computer programmer analyst. During his career, he received many kudos and awards as a team member, taking the Navy into the 21st century.

After retiring, he delivered pizza for Domino’s at its Middletown (Pa.) store for a year and at the Bradford (Pa.) store for three years. He then worked for Doyle Protective Services and Pinkerton Inc. as sight supervisor at Bradford Electronics until the plant closed.

He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, New Cumberland; and National Rifle Association; belonged to the American Legion, Wormleysburg; and AARP; was chaplain of Free and Accepted Masons Bradford Lodge 749; was a 32nd degree Mason of Coudersport Consistory; and a charter member of the Pennsylvania Lodge of Research.

He is survived by his son, Otis Hunter; six grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
