Edward Newmeyer Sr.

Decorated WWII veteran was VP at U.S. Steel

---- — Ed Newmeyer Sr., formerly of Stone Ridge Boulevard, Hermitage; Trafford, Pa.; and the Monroeville section of Pittsburgh, passed away at 3:20 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013, in Bentley House, Hermitage. He was 97.

Mr. Newmeyer was born Dec. 16, 1915, in Duquesne, Pa., a son of Byron and Florence Moffat Newmeyer.

He was a graduate of the former Duquesne High School.

A highly decorated war veteran, Ed served as a captain with the U.S. Army Air Corps in the mighty 8th Air Force 457th Bomb Group during World War II in the European theater of operations. He was stationed in England and participated in 29 combat missions over Germany, flying B-17 bombers. He was a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters and the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon.

Following his honorable discharge, Ed was employed by U.S. Steel in Pittsburgh for 30 years, retiring in 1975 as vice president of labor relations for raw materials and shipping.

Ed had many interests and hobbies throughout his long life. He loved music, particularly the Big Band era, and attending theater performances such as musicals, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and the Civic Light Opera.

He was an avid golfer and a former member of the Alcoma Country Club, Pittsburgh. He also enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles and vacationing with his family.

Ed was a staunch supporter of many nonprofit organizations. He had a love for animals, especially collie dogs, and shared this with his children. He was lifelong learner and very proficient in utilizing his computer.

Ed credited his longevity and good health to a daily Manhattan and a bit of chocolate.

His loving wife of 34 years, the former Imogene “Genie” Wilhelm, passed away June 11, 1983.

Surviving are: two daughters, Barbara Jean Massey and her husband Joseph, Loudon, Tenn.; and Beth Ann Richardson and her husband Randy, Waynesville, Ohio; a son, Ed Newmeyer Jr. and his wife Lisa, Hermitage; 10 grandchildren, Megan Geisel; Gary and Allie Newmeyer; Laura Elliott; Ryan and Robb Massey; and Randy, Katie, Grant and Sara Richardson; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He also leaves four nieces, Carol, Leilah, Karen and Connie; and a nephew, Paul.

Besides his wife, Ed was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Robert Newmeyer; three sisters, Thelma Corman, Leilah Herold and Catherine Newmeyer, who died in infancy; and a nephew, Jim.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Sharon Regional Hospice and Palliative Care, 2320 Highland Road, Hermitage, PA 16148; or to an animal rescue organization of the donor’s choice.
