Deanne Scott Hughes

Sharon native was sports star, championship coach

---- — TROY, Ala. – Deanne Scott Hughes of Troy, formerly of Sarasota, Fla., went graciously to her Heavenly Father on Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013. We lost a beautiful and wonderful daughter, a loving wife, devoted mother, dedicated sister, special aunt and beacon of light to her 59 cousins. She was 43.

Mrs. Hughes was born Dec. 7, 1969, in Sharon.

She was athletic and very active from an early age, playing only one year of Little League baseball as a catcher and making the all-star team that year as a 12-year-old. She ran track and was one of eight in the county to complete at Penn State University.

She was a cheerleader at Notre Dame School in Hermitage and a star player on its basketball team.

She moved to Sarasota in 1984 and played for Miss Sarasota softball. She also played high school basketball and softball and ran cross country for Sarasota High School. She was named most valuable player of the basketball program her senior year and helped her softball team to the state championship game in 1988. That summer she played softball on an Auburndale (Fla..) travel team, being named all-American shortstop after the championship game in Dallas, Texas.

After graduating from high school, she went to Hesston College on a combined basketball and softball scholarship. After injuring her knee, she accepted a scholarship at Troy State University to play softball where she earned all-American status her junior year (her last year of eligibility). She was then named interim head coach her senior year at Troy State University.

She taught and coached at Hopper Academy, Pike Liberal Arts School before moving to Goshen High School for the last 13 years. At Goshen, she was named head coach of the Lady Eagles volleyball and softball teams, taking the softball team to the state tournament three years in a row. She was named Alabama 2A Softball Coach of the Year in 2011 and 2012 and named All Area Coach of the Year in 2013. Her volleyball team won one regional title and three area championships. She also gave private pitching lessons to countless softball players in the Troy area.

She is survived by her parents, Robert and Nancy Scott, Sarasota; her husband, Michael Hughes; a son, Grant Hughes; three daughters, Haley, Holly and Hanna Hughes, all Troy; a sister, Darlene Raiti, West Middlesex; and three brothers, Robert Scott, Jacksonville, Fla.; Richard Scott, Troy; and Ronald Scott, South Bound Brook, N.J.

Honorary pallbearers were her volleyball and softball players.

A Christian funeral Mass was held Saturday, Sept. 28 in St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, Troy, with the Rev. Michael Denis “Den” Irwin as celebrant.

Interment was at Green Hills Cemetery, Troy.

Dee left a huge mark on many lives and will be truly missed but not forgotten.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hughes Fund set up for Dee’s children at Army Aviation Center Federal Credit Union, Box 672, Troy AL 36079.
