Archie Laverty

Westinghouse retiree lived in Sharon, enjoyed softball


- — A funeral service will be held Wednesday for Archie Laverty of Crowder Avenue, Sharon. He passed away peacefully of natural causes at 6:45 p.m. Saturday (10-12-13) in John XXIII Home, Hermitage. He was 83.

Mr. Laverty was born Jan. 31, 1930, in Sharon, a son of Adam and Harriet Hoyland Laverty.

A lifelong area resident, he was raised in Sharon and graduated from Sharon High School.

As a journeyman, Mr. Laverty worked for 30 years at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp., retiring Dec. 31, 1984.

Archie was a former member of Westinghouse Retirees Association and belonged to Covenant Presbyterian Church, Sharon.

A veteran of the Army, Mr. Laverty achieved the rank of sergeant and received several medals and citations for service to his country.

Mr. Laverty was a sports fan who played softball up until the 1980s. He loved a good round of golf and rooting for his Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates.

His wife, the former Phyllis F. Myers, whom he married May 2, 1953, survives at home.

He is also survived by: his daughter, Kathleen Reed and her husband David, Hermitage; three sons, James D. Laverty and his wife Beth, Cary, N.C.; Thomas R. Laverty, Raleigh, N.C.; and David M. Laverty and his wife Carol, Greenville; a brother, Robert Laverty and his wife Anna Mae, Ocala, Fla.; a sister-in--law, Bonita “Bonnie” Laverty, Hermitage; and seven grandchildren, Brent, Sara and Erin Laverty; Rebecca Reed, Chris Laverty; and twins, Daniel Laverty and Mary Cragle.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Phyllis Barnes, Frances Kekich and Mary Laverty, who died in infancy; his four brothers, Richard Laverty, George Laverty, Delbert Laverty and Thomas A. Laverty; and his grandson, Josh Reed.
