Alfred J. Joseph Sr. of 5380 Cassady Road, Hermitage, passed away at 6:47 a.m. Monday, Oct. 14, 2013, in the intensive care unit of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 89.
Mr. Joseph was born May 31, 1924, in Farrell, a son of Joseph and Mary Angelicchio Joseph.
A lifelong area resident, he was a 1942 graduate of Farrell High School.
Alfred was employed for more than 40 years at the former Sharon Steel Corp.’s Farrell plant, retiring in 1987 as the maintenance supervisor in the blast furnace.
He was a member of Church of Notre Dame, Hermitage.
Mr. Joseph served with the Army during World War II in the Pacific theater and was a charter member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5286, Farrell; and the American Legion, Harrisburg.
He was an avid hunter and enjoyed spending time with his family at their camp in Tionesta.
His wife, the former Ella M. Rearick, whom he married Sept. 5, 1948, passed away Aug. 30, 2010.
He is survived by: five sons, Dr. Alfred J. Joseph Jr. and his wife Judy, Hermitage; Ronald J. Joseph and his wife Carol, South Pymatuning Township; David L. Joseph and his wife Colleen, Hermitage; Dr. Joseph T. Joseph and his wife Lori, Clark; and Bryan M. Joseph, Hermitage; two sisters, Lucy Mariani, Connecticut; and Jenny Joseph, Hermitage; two brothers, James Joseph, Hermitage; and Joseph Joseph and his wife Sandy, Sharpsville; and a sister-in-law, Helen Joseph, Farrell.
He will be sadly missed by his 13 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife, Al was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Rose Sage and Virginia Harakal; a brother, Anthony Joseph; and a daughter-in-law, Jamie A. Joseph.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Church of Notre Dame, 2325 Highland Road, Hermitage, PA 16148; or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Service: Mass of Christian burial at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday (10-16-13) in Church of Notre Dame, Hermitage, with Monsignor Edward J. Zeitler, senior associate, as celebrant. Military honors will be rendered by the Honor Guard of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6233, West Middlesex; American Legion Post 432, Wheatland; and VFW Post 5286, Farrell, immediately following the Mass.
Interment: Hillcrest Memorial Park, Hermitage.
