Martha K. Butler

Eastern Star member was active in Sharon church

- — A funeral service will be Tuesday for Martha K. Butler, 2400 Garden Way, Hermitage, formerly of Meadowbrook Road, Hermitage. She passed away peacefully at 11:07 a.m. Friday (10-18-13) in Bentley House in Hermitage after an extended illness. She was 99.

Martha was born June 1, 1914, in Roaring Spring, Pa., a daughter of Leo and Sarah (Kagarise) Garber.

She was a graduate of Roaring Spring High School.

Martha had been an active member of First United Methodist Church of Sharon and was a member of the United Methodist Women’s group.

In her younger years, she had worked at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp.

Martha was an avid bowler, golfer and bridge player.

She was a lifetime member of the local Order of the Eastern Star and played piano at her church and for the Eastern Star meetings.

She was the widow of Donald R. Butler, who died Feb. 15, 1976.  

Her survivors include three nephews, Dick Hite and his wife Phylis, Wilmington, Del.; Jim Brown and his wife Rhea, New Hope, Pa.; and Thomas Brown and his wife Karen, St. Marys, Pa.

Also surviving are five great-nieces and great-nephews along with a great-great-niece and great-great-nephew.

Being the last of her siblings, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Esther Hite and Eleanor Brown; and two brothers, Edwin and John Garber.

Donations in her memory may be made to Bentley House Residents’ Activity Fund, 2400 Garden Way, Hermitage, PA 16148; or to Gentiva Hospice, 3124 Wilmington Road, New Castle, PA 16105-1100.

Calling hours: 1 p.m. to time of service Tuesday (10-22-13) in HAROLD W. STEVENSON FUNERAL HOME, 264 E. State St., Sharon. Condolences to the family may be expressed by visiting stevensonfuneralhome.net

Service: Funeral service at 2 p.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Terry Shaffer, pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating.

Interment: Hillcrest Memorial Park, Hermitage.
