Victor J. Colangelo

WE retiree was craftsman, WWII vet, trumpeter

- — A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday for Victor J. Colangelo of Cedar Ridge Road, Allison Park, formerly of Hermitage. He passed away of natural causes at 7:47 p.m. Friday (10-18-13) in his residence. He was 89.

Mr. Colangelo was born Oct. 19, 1923, in Farrell, one of seven children born to James and Carrie Colecchi Colangelo.

Victor graduated from Sharon High School in 1943.

A decorated Army veteran, he served during World War II with the 309th and was a bandsman playing trumpet with the ASF Band. He served in North Africa and Cairo, Egypt, and was honorably discharged March 1, 1946.

He began working part time in high school as a draftsman for the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. and retired in 1983 with 40 years of service.

He was a member of Our Lady of Fatima-St. Ann’s Church, Farrell, and its Holy Name Society. He was a third degree member of the Knights of Columbus.

During Victor’s retirement, he worked as an architectural designer, designing new homes and renovations. He also spent much time traveling the regional antique and flea market circuit.

He converted his architectural skills to woodworking and produced an array of furniture pieces along with wood novelties for children. Always a craftsman, Victor refurbished old furniture and did small remodeling projects.

He maintained close ties to friends and family throughout his life. He was a loving father; his uplifting spirit was contagious to all. While a resident of Allison Park the past four years, he built model planes and wooden toys and resumed playing his trumpet to the joy of all, while enjoying reading, gallivanting and meeting people.

His wife of 64 years, the former Lea S. Marocchetti, whom he married Oct. 26, 1946, in the former St. Ann’s Church, Farrell, passed away Oct. 17, 2010.

He leaves: his two daughters, Cari Batchelar and her husband David, Gibsonia; and Janet L. Devlin and her husband Stephen, Coshocton, Ohio; three sons, Don L. Colangelo and his wife Eva Kohn-Colangelo, West Hartford, Conn.; and James J. Colangelo and Victor E. Colangelo, both Bel Air, Md.; three sisters, Emily Marks and her husband Adam; Ann Tibolet; and Lillian Stigliano and her husband Frank, all Sharon; and five grandchildren, James, Aaron and Sean Devlin; and Brent and Elana Colangelo.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter; two sisters, Eleanor Cerra and Flora Rocco; and his brother, Dominic Colangelo.

Memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Fatima-St. Ann’s Church, 601 Roemer Blvd., Farrell, PA 16121; or Concordia at Rebecca Residence, 3746 Cedar Ridge Road, Allison Park, PA 15101.
