Henry ‘Pooch’ Mentrek

- — Henry “Pooch” Mentrek of Hermitage passed away peacefully at 4:35 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2013, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 92.

Mr. Mentrek was born July 30, 1921, in Sharon, a son of Michael and Mary Rabiasz Mentrek.

He was a lifelong area resident and a 1939 graduate of Sharon High School.

Mr. Mentrek served with the Navy during World War II and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Hickory Post 6166, Hermitage.

Mr. Mentrek was employed for more than 40 years at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp., retiring in 1983. He served as a steward for the International Union of Electrical Workers.

He was an active member of St. Adalbert’s Church, Farrell, where he belonged to the men’s club, sang in the choir, was a lecturer and helped make pierogis.

Years ago, Pooch was active in Hickory Little League and the junior varsity league as a manager, coach and umpire. He also played in the Westinghouse softball league as a catcher and was an avid golfer.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Josephine Horzich, whom he married Sept. 26, 1953; a daughter, Hilary A. Hanrahan, Atlantic Beach, Fla.; a son, Michael Mentrek and his wife Vicki, University Heights, Ohio; three grandchildren, Megan Bendson and her husband Brent, Durham, N.C.; Christopher Mentrek, University Heights; and Peter Mentrek and his wife Lindsay, Cincinnati; a sister, Frances Peters, Baltimore; a brother, Robert Mentrek, Sharpsville; and many nieces and nephews.

Pooch was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Michael Hanrahan; three sisters, Jane Chizmar, Irene Dare and Mildred Kantor; and two brothers, Alex “Mitzi” Mentrek; and Tadeusz Mentrek, who died in infancy.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Buhl Farm Park, 715 Hazen Road, Hermitage, PA 16148.

Service: Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. Friday (10-25-13) in St. Adalbert’s Church, Farrell, with the Rev. Joseph Campbell, pastor, as celebrant.

Interment: Holy Cross Cemetery, Hermitage.
