Cooper Bessemer retiree lived in Volant area

---- — Thomas Wesley Atkinson Sr. of Volant (Plain Grove Township, Lawrence County) passed away at 6:45 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2013, in Corsica (Union Township, Jefferson County). He was 79.

Mr. Atkinson was born Dec. 5, 1933, in Winona, Fayette County, W.Va., to Robert Stanley Atkinson and Lucy Kathryn Hedrick Atkinson.

Mr. Atkinson retired as a steelworker in 1983-84 from Cooper Bessemer, later called Cooper Energy in Grove City.

His wife, the former Elsie Louise Chittum, preceded him in death in 1994.

Surviving are: two daughters, Carolyn S. and her husband Bob E., Corsica; and Deborah K. and her husband Jim V., Fredonia; a son, Thomas W. Jr., Volant; a sister, Mary Alice and her husband Merle Wolfe, Duncannon, Pa.; and five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Steven Lee; a brother, Stanley David; and a great-grandson, Joey.

Service: Funeral service at 11 a.m. Monday (9-16-13) in the funeral home.

Interment: Leesburg Cemetery.
