George M. Kush

WE retiree, outdoorsman, gardener was in Marines

---- — A funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday for George M. Kush of Nugent Convalescent Home, Hermitage. He passed from this life at 3:10 p.m. Wednesday (9-11-13) in the home after a brief illness. He had resided on Charles Street in Sharpsville. He was 94.

Mr. Kush was born March 6, 1919, in Windber, Somerset County, to Alexander and Mary Belanicz Kush and was raised by Alexander and Mary Malenda Kush.

He attended Windber High School.

George was married to Elizabeth “Betty” A. Koshar on Aug. 30, 1947. Betty preceded him in death on March 19, 2012.

George was a member of the former St. Ann Church in Farrell and was a current member of Our Lady of Fatima-St. Ann Church in Farrell.

Being a proud patriot and having loved his country, he enlisted in the Marine Corps during World War II. He took part in three first-wave landings at Eniwetok, Guam and Guadalcanal.

Mr. Kush retired as a supervisor in 1981 from the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp., with 42 years of service.

George always tended a wonderful vegetable and flower garden. Betty enjoyed canning the fruits of his labor which they shared with friends and neighbors.

An enthusiastic outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing and camping at Pymatuning Reservoir and hunting with his sons and extended family. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 4003 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5286, both Farrell; and Westinghouse Retirees Association.

As a loyal and devoted husband and father, George, with Betty, raised three sons who survive him: Raymond G. and his wife Lorraine, Lockport, N.Y.; Richard J. and his wife Barbara, Chandler, Ariz.; and Robert A. and his wife Cynthia, Gilbert, Ariz. There are seven surviving brothers: Alexander, Philadelphia; Thomas, Redwood, Calif.; Frank, Tempe, Ariz.; Michael and his wife Pauline, Deltona, Fla.; Stanley, Sun City, Ariz.; Joseph and his wife Mary Lou, Scottsdale, Ariz.; and Stephen and his wife JoAnna, Sun City; and a sister, Frances Rotell and her husband Ron, State College, Pa.

George was the proud grandfather of Aaron, Liz, Tim, Brandy, Dan, Jeffrey, Christopher, Andy and Lesley. He was a great-grandfather to Gayda, Cameron, Cayleigh, Emily, Antowine, Nevaeh, Amarie, Ryan, Grant Jr., Jaykere, Ava, Ryellee, Destiny, Arriana, Hezekiah, Jason, Jordan, Justin, Holly, Carli and Ashlee.

Besides his wife, Betty, preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers, August and Anthony Kush; and four sisters, Sophie Verostick, Mary Styduhar, Ann Cartica and Evelyn Troup.

Service: Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Tuesday (9-17-13) in Our Lady of Fatima-St. Ann Church, 601 Roemer Blvd., Farrell, with the Rev. Joseph C. Campbell as celebrant.

Burial: St. Ann Cemetery, Hermitage, with military honors rendered by combined honor guards of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5286, Farrell, and Post 6233, West Middlesex; and American Legion Post 432, Wheatland.
