Former Farrell man owned Hi-Grade Market


---- — BEACHWOOD, Ohio – Leonard Hartstein, Beachwood, formerly of Farrell, died early Monday morning, July 8, 2013, in Montefiore Nursing Home in Beachwood. He was 82.

Mr. Hartstein was born June 19, 1931, in Farrell to Harry and Helen Hartstein.

He was the beloved husband of the late Phyllis; devoted father of Harriette Feld, wife of Chuck; Alayne Hartstein Riley,   who is deceased, wife of Marty; and Howard Hartstein; a loving grandfather of Heather Ewers, wife of Mike; Sarah Burger, wife of Steve; and Ben Feld; and great-grandfather of Andrew and Landon Ewers.

For many years, Leonard owned and operated a thriving butcher shop business, the former Hi-Grade Market at 517 Idaho St. in Farrell that was established by his father, Harry, in the 1940s. As proprietor, he was known for offering high-quality, fresh and reasonably priced meat, earning the love of his loyal customers and respect of his community. Mr. Hartstein was featured with other Idaho Street business owners in an article published Oct. 17, 1984, in The Herald.

After retiring in 1994, Leonard and Phyllis relocated to Beachwood to be closer to family.

Leonard was past president of the Shaarey Tikvah Men’s Club, Beachwood; and was a member of the Solon (Ohio) Chabad.

Service: Funeral services at 2 p.m. Wednesday (7-10-13) in BERKOWITZ KUMIN MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 1985 Taylor Road, Cleveland Heights, Ohio.

Interment: Zion Memorial Park, 5461 Northfield Road, Bedford Heights, Ohio.
