Thelma G. Ligette

Retail retiree, real estate agent served in community


---- — Thelma G. Ligette of Hermitage passed away at 5:45 a.m. Sunday, July 7, 2013, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after an extended illness. She was 91 years old.

Mrs. Ligette was born Nov. 15, 1921, in Johnston, Ohio, to her parents, John S. and Flora Hall Gilliss.

She graduated in 1940 from Warren G. Harding High School in Warren, Ohio, and was a 1947 alumna of Kent (Ohio) State University, with a bachelor of science degree in merchandising.

On Sept. 8, 1951, she married her husband, Stephen Ligette Jr., who preceded her in death Aug. 26, 2002.

Mrs. Ligette retired from the former McKelvey Department Store in Youngstown after many years of service as retail merchandiser. She was a licensed real estate agent and worked for seven years as a sales associate with Harmer Real Estate in Hermitage.

Mrs. Ligette was very active in her community as a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, Hermitage; and a charter member and past president of Christian Associates of the Shenango Valley. She was active with the Penn Lakes Council of Girl Scouts of America as a troop leader and associate chairwoman; and in the organization of former troop leaders the Encourilators, now known as the Ever Greens; and was a volunteer with the American Heart Association and American Red Cross for blood drives.

She was a charter member and organizer of AARP Shenango Valley Chapter 3616, serving in several officer positions; was active with the Adult Literary Council and the Auxiliary of what is now St. Paul’s, West Salem Township; was an advisor to the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority of Thiel College, Greenville; and Keystone Blind Association advisor???; and was a volunteer for the Mercer County Election Board. 

Mrs. Ligette is survived by her children, a daughter, Nancy Ligette, Pittsburgh; and a son, John Ligette, Rock Hill, S.C.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Hiram Gilliss.

Service: Funeral service at noon Friday (7-12-13) in St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, 159 Todd Ave., Hermitage, with the Rev. David Williamson, pastor, officiating. The body of Mrs. Ligette will lie in state in the church from 11 a.m. to time of service.
