Rose Joanne Martof

Devoted Masury church member was fine cook

- — Rose Joanne Martof of Masury passed away Tuesday morning, Nov. 19, 2013, in her home. She was 88.

Mrs. Martof was born Oct. 16, 1925, in Crucible, Pa., a daughter of Michael and Rose Leja Stypula.

She graduated in 1943 from Cumberland Township High School and went on to work in Detroit and Cleveland during World War II in the defense plants, where she was fortunate to meet first lady Eleanor Roosevelt.

She leaves behind her devoted husband, Edwin J. Martof. The two were the first couple to be married in St. Mary’s Church in Crucible, on May 1, 1946; they shared 67 wonderful years together.

Her surviving family includes: six children, Gene Martof, Greensboro, N.C.; Janet Mitcheltree and her husband Thomas, Masury; Rita Gilliland and her husband Hank, Hartford; Rick Martof, Masury; Rosemary Frazier and her husband Phil, Hubbard; and Nancy Clayton and her husband John, Brookfield; her daughter-in-law, Carol Martof, Hartford; and her son-in-law, Michael Wilt, Amherst, Mass.

She also leaves 12 grandchildren, Dan and Mike Martof; Sam Wilt; Tom and Matt Mitcheltree; Nick, Josh and Adam Gilliland; Kyle and Kelly “Rose” Frazier; and Erica “Rose” and LeighAnn Clayton; and six great-grandchildren, Maisie Dube, Katherine “Rose,” Lilly, Joseph, Kaci and Evan Mitcheltree. She has five surviving siblings, Mike and Joe Stypula, Barbara Brady, Mary Abrams and Martin Yandura.

Mrs. Martof was preceded in death by her brother, John; her son, Ed; her daughter, Vicki Wilt; and a granddaughter, Jennifer Wells.

Rose’s Roman Catholic faith always sustained her. She was a devoted member of the former St. Bernadette’s Church in Masury, now St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Community.

She will always be remembered and cherished as a beautiful lady and a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was an extraordinary cook and baker, who taught her family how to make many dishes and desserts, especially Polish ones. Mom’s family gathered religiously at noon every Sunday after Mass to share dinner and conversation.

As a young adult, Rose played in a women’s basketball league. Later, she enjoyed bowling as well.

In addition, Rose was an avid reader and gardener. Many passersby would stop and comment on her beautiful flowers. She also enjoyed cross stitch and crocheting and made sure everyone in her family received some kind of afghan or quilt made by her.

Rose’s family would like to thank the staffs of MVI Hospice, Dr. Lori Hemrock, Dr. Robert Marx, and especially the caring people at the office of Dr. P.Y. Solanki, her primary care physician. We also want to acknowledge her longtime neighbors, the Smith family, who helped tremendously through the years.

The care and kindness shown to Rose will always be remembered.

MARTOF

Mrs. Edwin J. (Rose Joanne), 88, Masury.
