Here are some thoughts from a guy who is still trying to figure out which singer he likes better — Miley Cyrus or Hannah Montana!
What, they’re the same person? Give me a break. One has blonde hair. And they have albums out with different names.
Next thing you’ll be telling me is that Clark Kent is also Superman. Hey, they look completely different and one wears glasses.
OK, naturally I’m kidding. I know that Miley is actually Hannah. After all, I have two granddaughters — Julia, 7, and Lexi, 9 — who watch the Disney channel religiously when the “Hanna Montana” show is on.
And while I hesitate to ever recommend any TV show, it’s actually a pretty wholesome family show. And the songs she sings are void of the usual sex, drug and crap — excuse me, I mean rap — kind of stuff that permeates today’s music.
But will it last? How many times over the years have we seen teen stars’ lives wrecked as they grow older?
Look at Brittany Spears. Or not. There’s a long list of teen stars who descended into disaster.
Naturally, part of the problem with the maturing of young stars has to do with parenting. Her dad Billy Ray Cyrus seems much better at raising her than he was singing “Achy, Breaky Heart,” one of the most annoying songs of all time.
But it’s time for Miley to pick one name and stick with it. On the TV show she is Miley Stewart and her alter ego is Hanna Montana. Her real name is Miley Cyrus. Then again, that isn’t her real name. Miley is her nickname. Her real name is Destiny Hope Cyrus.
Look for that name on the next album.
• But perhaps part of the persona of singers is determined by how they separate themselves from their real world appearance.
That’s why when I appear in the Mercer County Senior Follies tonight, I will look completely different. I will take off my glasses so nobody recognizes me. Oops, I just noticed that I’m not wearing glasses in my Herald photo with this column.
Maybe a Hannah Montana wig would be more effective!
• The movie “Bucket List” was about a pair of aging men doing some of the things they wanted to do before the “kick the bucket.”
One of my great wishes for everyone would be that at least once in your life you would have the opportunity to sing with a band. Even if you aren’t a good singer, it’s an exhilarating experience.
The Senior Follies band, which includes horns this year, is phenomenal. They are worth the price of the show alone. It’s rare you get a chance to see such a talented group of professionals perform at a charity show like this. If you get a chance, stop and hear them at 7 p.m. today or 2 p.m. Sunday at Hickory High auditorium.
I think they are even better than Hannah Miley Stewart Destiny Hope Montana.
