HHS Chamber Singers’ concert was inspiring
Dec. 19 about 70 people gathered at Fresh Grounds on Main Street in Greenville. The occasion was a concert given by Hickory High School Chamber Singers under the expert direction of Brandy Rockage. Those who were unable to attend missed a most inspiring evening of choral music, both in quality and variety.
As the presentation began to unfold, the bond between Mrs. Rockage and her choral students was quite obvious; this in itself was uplifting. How beautiful it is to hear great choral music sung by well-trained voices. The result is an inner peace, the kind that touches not just the mind and heart, but something far more important – the spirit. Great choral music always does that to those whose hearts are open, any time of the year. But when that happens during the season of Advent, the effect is even more beautiful, for it warms us in our inner spirit and takes us to new heights of transcendent joy.
Advent is a season when we anxiously await the birth of the One who saves us. As we get closer and closer to the star of Bethlehem on that long ago winter night, our joy increases by leaps and bounds. It is then that we grow most in gratitude and begin to appreciate the magnificence of God’s love for us. Our unworthiness is made worthy by the sacrifice of the Lamb on our behalf, and we begin to understand that God created us to love one another, to encourage one another and to celebrate Christ’s image reflected in one another.
I was deeply touched by the music and by the informal conversations I had with the members of the choir during the “break” times of that two-hour concert. How wonderful it is to be with young people whose lives add value and meaning to ours.
Merry Christmas to Brandy and all who sang.
