OUR VIEW: With holidays around corner, Herald food drive lags a little

---- — One of the most overused statements you’ll hear is the following: “There’s good news and there’s bad news.”

Still as trite as it may be, when it comes to The Herald Good News Fund, there’s a bit of troubling news concerning the 20th annual drive to provide turkeys for local families in need. But there’s good news because there is time left to help.

To date in the drive, generous businesses and individuals have contributed more than $10,000 to help put food on the table for needy families at Christmas.

However, because the large increase in the cost of poultry this year, it will cost more than $21,000 to provide the usual 1,200 turkeys that are distributed through the Community Food Warehouse of Mercer County’s network of pantries.

One of the best ideas is to donate money in the name of a family member or friend as one of their Christmas presents this year.

Many of us could go with one or two fewer presents under the tree if we know that we’re helping people who may not be able to afford presents or even properly feed their children.

While we make a lot of noise about the “fiscal cliff” that will affect our government, there are people already hanging by their fingertips off their personal fiscal cliff because of the downturn in the economy in this area.

Remember, all donations are tax-free and the year-round fund is affiliated with the Community Foundation of Eastern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania.

Anyone wishing to help should make checks payable to The Good News Fund and mail them to Nancy Ash, in care of The Herald, Box 51, Sharon 16146. Or Contributions may be dropped off at The Herald office, 52 S. Dock St., Sharon, or at the Allied News office in Grove City.

The Herald publishes a list of all donors as a way of saying “Thanks for helping others.” But the real thanks will be knowing that people in need have something worthwhile to eat on Christmas Day.
