- — Greenville

• Fire at about 2:45 a.m. early on Christmas Eve damaged a vacant apartment building at 41 S. Race St., but caused no injuries, firefighters said.

The heavily damaged two-story brick building had electric service but no occupants in its several apartments. A state police fire marshal has been notified and will be helping with the investigation, firefighters said.

The building is owned by Ron Lewis whose Greenville Tire and Rubber business is across a parking lot and wasn’t damaged, firefighters said.

Greenville was assisted by crews from Hempfield and West Salem townships and East End volunteer fire departments, Mercer.

• A chimney fire at about 10 p.m. Monday chased members of a family out of their home for a while at 87 N. Second St., firefighters said.

There was no structural damage, and no one was injured, firefighters said, adding that the family returned to the house after it had been cleared of smoke.

Hempfield Township
