Douglas H. Campbell, 28, of Hadley, was taken to the trauma center of St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown, after a three-vehicle crash at about 7:15 a.m. Friday on state Route 158 in East Lackawannock Township, police said.

Police said the crash occurred as the westbound Campbell car tried to pass another vehicle and collided with an oncoming car driven by Jessica Chestnut of East Palestine, Ohio.

As the drivers tried to avoid the collision, their vehicles went off the roadway and back on, with the Campbell car hitting an embankment and the Chestnut car, a mailbox; both crossed lanes of travel, police said.

The Campbell car ended up in the middle of the road and was then hit by another westbound car, driven by Gregory Barnes, 53, of Mercer, that was unable to stop, police said.

Barnes, Chestnut and a passenger in her car were wearing seatbelts and suffered minor injuries, police said.

Campbell, who wasn’t wearing a seat belt, was cited, police said. His condition was not available.
