• Gary P. Golub Sr., 47, of 540 Cleveland St., Masury, scammed a Spencer Avenue woman by claiming to be a policeman, police said.

He told the victim last Wednesday evening by phone her son needed money for bail and if she didn’t pay it, police would take the license plate off her car. Golub arrived Thursday and took a check for $61.50 from the victim, police said.

Another man who isn’t being charged tried to cash it at a local bank where police confronted him. He is cooperating with the investigation, police said.

Brookfield police assisted Sharon investigators Thursday when they arrested Golub at his home. He had warrants on other Ohio charges and was taken to Trumbull County Jail.

Golub was charged with impersonating a public servant, theft by deception and theft by extortion.

He will be arraigned on the Sharon charges when prosecutors finish their cases in Ohio, police said.

On Friday, Golub was charged with theft by deception, theft and receiving stolen property after he was paid $2,300 by a Farrell resident and failed to perform contracting services promised, Southwest Mercer County Regional police said.

• Dennison Keith Wheeler, 43, of 170 Second Ave., took $130 from Clarencedale Cake in downtown Sharon for advertising on a race car he doesn’t have or represent, police said.

Wheeler told the business owner the company’s name would be on a race car at Sharon Speedway for two years, police said.

Wheeler was arrested last Wednesday at home. After his arraignment, he was taken to Mercer County Jail on a parole detainer from Lawrence County, police said.

• Someone stole guns after kicking the back door open in a burglary reported at about 2:10 p.m. Friday in the 400 block of Quinby Street.

The homeowner told police a .22 caliber Colt revolver was missing along with a .300 caliber Savage lever action rifle with a scope and a 12-gauge Charles Daley shotgun.

• Police said Jason S. Ost, 24, of 625 S. State Line Road, was disoriented when they pulled him over during a traffic stop at about 9:40 p.m. Friday on North Water Avenue.

He had Xanax pills, a prescription anxiety drug, and a small amount of suspected heroin powder, police said.

Ost was charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

• Kyle Charles Beckman, 19, of 92 Strawbridge Ave., had marijuana and pipes used to smoke it when he was pulled over in a traffic stop at about 10 p.m. Friday on Chestnut Street, police said.

Beckman was charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

• Laurie J. Blevins, 51, of 415 Lafayette Ave., turned herself in on charges of possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police called to her home at about 1:20 a.m. Feb. 8 saw in plain view a brass smoking pipe and a crusher used to prepare marijuana for smoking when they responded to a domestic abuse call, police said.

• Someone stole a global positioning unit and other items from an unlocked pickup parked on Ormond Avenue.

The Garmin Nuvi, valued at $250, was stolen along with an iPhone charging cord and personal papers in the theft reported at 1:15 p.m. Saturday, police said.

• Someone vandalized 18 cars in a West Hill incident reported at about 1:25 a.m. Sunday.

Someone sprayed white paint on 18 vehicles parked in the area of Lafayette and Logan avenues, Wheeler Place and Davis Street, police said.

Southwest Mercer County Regional

• Russell L. Taylor, 33, of 1003 Stambaugh Ave., Farrell, was arrested for allegedly having sex with a minor under 16 on several occasions between February and November 2013 in his home, police said. The victim told police she was afraid Taylor would hurt her or her family if she didn’t do what he wanted, police said.

Taylor was charged with statutory sexual assault and corruption of a minor. He was taken to Mercer County Jail after failing to post bail.

• Someone damaged a van in an incident reported at 10:40 a.m. Saturday in the sub 100 block of Balm Street, Wheatland.

A vandal spray painted the vehicle with white paint during the night, police said.

• Russell L. Carter, 33, of 1480 George St. Ext., Hermitage, at 5:30 p.m. Monday at 1003 Stambaugh Ave., Farrell, on a warrant for alleged sexual assault.
