Service to honor Pastor Chavers

FARRELL — Community Missionary Baptist Church will celebrate the 48th pastoral anniversary of Pastor Robert E. Chavers and Sister Elizabeth Chavers during the 11 a.m. service Sunday. Guest speaker will be the Rev. Carl Vactor of Jerusalem Second Baptist Church in Urbana, Ohio.

A celebration dinner will be held at Farrell VFW Post 5286.

Rev. Chavers was baptized in Community Baptist Church and graduated from theological seminaries in Youngstown and Pittsburgh. In 1959 he became a licensed minister at his home church. He was ordained in 1961 under the instruction of his predecessor, Rev. Robert J. Mason, and served as assistant pastor. Rev. Mason accepted another calling and, in October 1964, Rev. Chavers succeeded him.

During his nearly five decades, the church saw growth spiritually and financially, and completed several building projects over the years.

A longtime member of the Mercer County Housing Authority Board, Rev. Chavers was honored in 2005 when the 211 Federal Street Community Building in Farrell was renamed Chavers Community Center.

Sister Chavers served the church in the choir and Senior Mission and as reporter. She was chairperson of Women’s Days and was a speaker at some of the observances.
