America, what have we become? Ignoring sin won’t make it go away

From the Pulpit

- — Has America become the land of the special interest and home of the double standard? Let’s see:

If we lie to Congress it’s a felony and if Congress lies to us it’s just politics.

In public schools, you can teach that homosexuality is OK but you better not use the word God.

You can kill an unborn child (55 million) but it’s wrong to execute a mass murderer.

We don’t burn books but we rewrite them.

We got rid of the communist and socialist threat by renaming them progressives.

We are unable to close our border with Mexico but have no problem protecting the 38th parallel in Korea.

If you protest against President Obama’s policies you’re a racist or a terrorist, but if you burned an American flag or George Bush in effigy it was your First Amendment right.

You can have pornography on TV or the Internet but you better not put a nativity scene in a public park for Christmas.

We can use a human fetus for medical research but it’s wrong to use an animal.

We take money from those who work hard for it and give it to those who don’t want to work.

We support the Constitution but only when it supports our political ideology.

We still have freedom of speech but only if we are being politically correct.

Parenting has been replaced with Ritalin and video games.

The land of opportunity is now the land of handouts.

Think about it! The world’s greatest super power can’t defend its borders, balance its budget, manufacture it own products or protect its own currency, but they want to control every aspect of your life. What has happened to the land of the free and home of the brave?

Until “We the People” stand up and speak up, nothing will change. Wake up America! Wake up pastors!

State by state, legislation is being passed making it legal for men to marry men and women to marry women. The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob labels that as “an abomination.” The culture war in America is raging and the majority of America’s pastors are on the sidelines with a silence that is deafening. The liberal “tyrants of tolerance” have a bull’s eye on your pulpit. There is a so-called “hate crimes” bill pending before the Senate that will force you to permit and/or perform same-sex marriages even if it’s in violation of your faith.

The church must realize that ignoring these atrocities will not make them go away. We are still “One Nation Under God.” But for how long if you don’t speak out and take part in waking America up? Freedom isn’t free. If we do not use our freedom to defend our freedom, we will lose our freedom. It doesn’t matter what the so-called experts say, it only matters what God says. I do not judge the contents of the Bible by other books, I judge other books by the content of the Bible. And the Bible says we are to be walking epistles, read by man.

If you feel like God can’t use you, remember: Noah got drunk, Abraham was too old, Isaac was a daydreamer, Jacob was a liar, Joseph was abused, Moses was a stutterer, Gideon was afraid, Sampson was a womanizer, Rahab was a prostitute; Jeremiah and Timothy were too young, David was an adulterer and murderer, Jonah ran from God, Job went bankrupt, Peter denied Christ, the disciples fell asleep while praying, Martha worried about everything. So no more excuses. And it’s not about you, it’s about Jesus Christ; you aren’t the message, you are the messenger.

Poet Ella Wheeler wrote, “To sin by silence when we should protest makes cowards out of men.” Is that what America is becoming? God forbid. God have mercy.

Pastor Cherrie Andres is a pulpit supply pastor with the Western Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church.
