Grove City High’s Matt Kiser and Josiah Welker reached the finals of Wednesday’s District 10 Class AA doubles tennis tournament at Pennbriar Athletic Club, Erie.

Kiser-Welker, the No. 1 seed, fell to Fairview’s 2nd-seeded Thomas Shuttleworth and Jake Batchelor, 6-1, 7-6(7-4). In Wednesday’s semifinals, Kiser-Welker ousted Greenville I (T.J. McGary-Brian Goda), 11-10(9-7) and edged Oil City II (Matt Heath-Tim Kozek), 8-5 in the 2nd round.

McGary-Goda were seeded 4th after drawing an opening-round bye, then defeated Hickory II (Sean and Ryan Zippie) 8-5 in the 2nd round. In the quarterfinals, McGary-Goda ousted Warren I (Sam Birgel-Adrian Shodi) 8-2, before bowing in the semis.

Shuttleworth-Batchelor defeated Hickory I (Corey Runyan-Ryan McCann) 10-0 in the semifinals. Runyan-McCann were seeded 3rd and awarded an opening-round bye. They handled Harbor Creek I (Brian Capozzielollo-Adam Spring), 8-6 in the quarters.

The Fairview duo advanced to the PIAA tourney May 23-24 in Hershey. Fairview’s Johnathan Knoll beat Batchelor Monday for the D-10 singles title. Shuttleworth, the No. 1 seed Monday, was knocked out in the 2nd round by Hickory’s Ryan Zippie on Saturday.

Results of other Mercer County combos:

ä Sharon I (William Palmer-Sal Messina) defeated Titusville II (Eric Drusko-Mike Vinopal) 8-5 in the 1st round, but bowed to Fairview II (David Gorman-Jim Fitzgibbon) 8-2 in the 2nd round.

ä Sharon II (John Muszik-Morgan Manzanares) fell 8-1 to Oil City I (Andrew Mong-Seth Scannell) in the opening round.

ä Hickory II (Zippie-Zippie) defeated Girard I (Dennis Russell-Zach Herrick) 9-7 in the opening round, and Oil City I (Mong-Scannell), 8-3 in the 2nd round.

ä Greenville II (Kurt Jones-Greg Sabo) defeated Grove City II (Brady Beech-Drew Claussen) 9-7 in the 1st round, but dropped an 8-1 verdict to McCann-Runyan in the 2nd round.

ä Kennedy Catholic I (Ross Magestro-Dan Kopas) was defeated 8-3 by Warren I (Birgel-Shodi), and KC II (Matt Luce-Eric Grasso) dropped an 8-1 verdict to Warren II (Mark and Scott Schoenborn), both in the 1st round.

Today at Pennbriar is the D-10 Class AA Team Championship between Hickory and Fairview.
