Grove City High’s Matt Kiser and Josiah Welker reached the finals of Wednesday’s District 10 Class AA doubles tennis tournament at Pennbriar Athletic Club, Erie.
Kiser-Welker, the No. 1 seed, fell to Fairview’s 2nd-seeded Thomas Shuttleworth and Jake Batchelor, 6-1, 7-6(7-4). In Wednesday’s semifinals, Kiser-Welker ousted Greenville I (T.J. McGary-Brian Goda), 11-10(9-7) and edged Oil City II (Matt Heath-Tim Kozek), 8-5 in the 2nd round.
McGary-Goda were seeded 4th after drawing an opening-round bye, then defeated Hickory II (Sean and Ryan Zippie) 8-5 in the 2nd round. In the quarterfinals, McGary-Goda ousted Warren I (Sam Birgel-Adrian Shodi) 8-2, before bowing in the semis.
Shuttleworth-Batchelor defeated Hickory I (Corey Runyan-Ryan McCann) 10-0 in the semifinals. Runyan-McCann were seeded 3rd and awarded an opening-round bye. They handled Harbor Creek I (Brian Capozzielollo-Adam Spring), 8-6 in the quarters.
The Fairview duo advanced to the PIAA tourney May 23-24 in Hershey. Fairview’s Johnathan Knoll beat Batchelor Monday for the D-10 singles title. Shuttleworth, the No. 1 seed Monday, was knocked out in the 2nd round by Hickory’s Ryan Zippie on Saturday.
Results of other Mercer County combos:
ä Sharon I (William Palmer-Sal Messina) defeated Titusville II (Eric Drusko-Mike Vinopal) 8-5 in the 1st round, but bowed to Fairview II (David Gorman-Jim Fitzgibbon) 8-2 in the 2nd round.
ä Sharon II (John Muszik-Morgan Manzanares) fell 8-1 to Oil City I (Andrew Mong-Seth Scannell) in the opening round.
ä Hickory II (Zippie-Zippie) defeated Girard I (Dennis Russell-Zach Herrick) 9-7 in the opening round, and Oil City I (Mong-Scannell), 8-3 in the 2nd round.
ä Greenville II (Kurt Jones-Greg Sabo) defeated Grove City II (Brady Beech-Drew Claussen) 9-7 in the 1st round, but dropped an 8-1 verdict to McCann-Runyan in the 2nd round.
ä Kennedy Catholic I (Ross Magestro-Dan Kopas) was defeated 8-3 by Warren I (Birgel-Shodi), and KC II (Matt Luce-Eric Grasso) dropped an 8-1 verdict to Warren II (Mark and Scott Schoenborn), both in the 1st round.
Today at Pennbriar is the D-10 Class AA Team Championship between Hickory and Fairview.
BASEBALL
ä Sharpsville 8, West Middlesex 7 (8 inn.) — At West Middlesex, the visiting Blue Devils drew a break in defeating their traditional rivals.
In the 8th, Sean Haywood had a 1-out single, Vincent Falconi’s sacrifice bunt attempt was botched by the Big Reds, then Josh Rodondi walked, loading the bases. West Middlesex’s Marcus Murray then hit Torin Karsonovich with a pitch, forcing home the eventual game-winning run.
Kyle Allen provided West Middlesex with a short-lived 5-4 5th-frame lead via a 2-run home run, but Sharpsville’s Matt Totin tomahawked a 3-run round-tripper in the top half of the 7th stanza, staking Sharpsville to a 7-5 lead before the Big Reds rallied to knot the count and coerce extra innings.
For Sharpsville (6-5), which has won 5 of its last 6 games, right-handed reliever Casey Dumars delivered 4 effective frames, permitting 2 runs on 2 hits, whiffing 2 and hitting a batter. Sharpsville starter Mike Rice yielded 5 runs on 7 hits in 4 innings. Also, Karsonovich and Mack Morris mustered RBI singles.
For Middlesex (5-6, 5-10), Allen added a single to his ’dinger and Kyle Wimer whacked a single and double. Middlesex moundsman Logan Mihalcak allowed 4 first-inning runs, then blanked the Blue Devils until the 7th when he was spelled by Murray.
ä Reynolds 9, Kennedy Catholic 7 — At Transfer, Corey Augustine launched a 2-out, 3-run, walkoff home run in the final frame to lift the Raiders (6-7) past KC. With 2 outs in the bottom of the 7th frame, Tony D’Urso singled and Luke Taylor reached on an error before Augustine belted a fastball on an 0-and-2 count to the pine trees past right field.
Augustine also smacked a solo homer and singled while Sam Fuchs singled and doubled. Taylor earned the win, pitching 2 scoreless innings of relief. He fanned 4, walked 1 and allowed only 2 hits. Nick Young started and gave up 4 hits, 2 walks with 4 strikeouts.
For Kennedy, Rick DeMartinis ripped 3 singles and Lucas Grande doubled. Dan D’Onofrio went the distance for the Golden Eagles. He whiffed 4 batters, didn’t issue a walk and yielded 8 hits.
ä Sharon 7, Wilmington 4 — At New Wilmington, the visiting Tigers remained undefeated, but had to hang on.
Starting pitcher Cory Johnson, in 6 stanzas, fanned 5 and walked only 1, scattered 7 hits and allowed 3 earned runs. Reliever Shawn Matsko yielded 2 hits and an earned run before closing the deal in the 7th stanza.
Offensively for Sharon (11-0, 14-0), Mike Tomko tattooed a 2-run home run among his 2 hits and drove in 3 runs, Todd Rearick ripped a single and double and knocked in a run, and Johnson joined the hit parade, plating a pair and tallying twice.
For Wilmington (4-7, 5-8-1), Shane Wagner whacked 3 hits, drilling 2 doubles and driving in a run, and Frank Telesz singled and doubled while Phillip Woods contributed a 2-run single. Starting Greyhounds’ hurler Ian Kelly lasted only 3 innings, whiffing 2 and walking 2, but yielding 6 hits and 7 runs, though only 3 were earned. Right-handed reliever Troy Yeager shut out Sharon in 4 frames of hitless pitching, fanning 5.
ä Slippery Rock 3, Grove City 0 — At Slippery Rock, Slippery Rock right-hander Travis McDowell outpitched Grove City southpaw Jim McConnell.
Slippery Rock scored a pair of 1st-inning runs, then added a 3rd-inning insurance tally that McDowell made stand up. He fired a 4-hitter, struck out 8 and walked 3.
“We had a couple opportunities, put some men on, but just couldn’t do anything,” lamented Grove City head coach Pat Forese.
Nick Cress cracked a couple doubles and Ryan Ferguson forged another pair of hits for Slippery Rock (6-5 in District 10 Region 4-AAA).
McConnell collected 7 strikeouts and did not issue a walk while scattering a half-dozen hits for Grove Cit (5-6 in Region 4-AAA, 7-10 overall).
ä Jamestown 4, Mercer 3 — At Mercer’s Veterans Field at Brandy Springs Park, Paul Ochs ripped a 2-run single to lead the visiting Muskies (4-7, 5-8).
Tom Shannon earned the win in 4 1/3 innings of relief. He struck out 2, had no walks and allowed 1 run on 4 hits. Ethan Adams started and David Richter earned the save. Also for Jamestown, Michael Gross was 3-for-4 with an RBI.
Ian Dunn threw all 7 frames for Mercer. He fanned 6, walked 1 and gave up 7 hits. Cody Frey ripped an RBI double.
SOFTBALL
ä Slippery Rock 3, Sharon 2 — At Wengler Field, the Lady visiting Lady Rockets plated all of their runs in the 1st 2 innings and held off the Lady Tigers (8-7) for the win.
Morgan Robinson tossed a complete-game 5-hitter for Slippery Rock. She struck out 5 and walked 1. Robinson ripped 2 singles at the plate, while Hilly Pender doubled and had 2 singles.
Julie Norris went the distance for Sharon. She fanned 1, walked 1 and gave up 8 hits. For Sharon, Brittanie Vukovich and Julie Norris both doubled.
ä West Middlesex 13, Reynolds 1 (5 inn.) — At Transfer, Kori Aubel collected 2 singles, a double and triple, scored 3 times and drove in 4 runs as the Ms. Reds (13-3) routed the host Lady Raiders (6-9).
Also for West Middlesex, Carrie Young was 3-for-4 with a double, 3 runs scored and 2 RBI, Mandi Kedrick singled and tripled, scored once and drove in a pair of runs, and Britnee Zieminick ripped 2 singles and had an RBI. On the mound, Heather Michaels fanned 6, walked 3 and only allowed 3 hits in 4 innings for WM.
Stephanie Collenette doubled and scored for Reynolds. Erin Scott went the distance on the mound for the Lady Raiders. She whiffed 4, walked 1 and surrendered 15 hits.
ä Grove City 9, Mercer 1 — At Grove City’s Memorial Park, Chelsea Filer twirled a complete-game 3-hitter as the Lady Eagles (10-5, 11-6) topped the Lady M’s. Filer struck out 14 batters, didn’t issue a walk and only gave up 3 singles.
Offensively for GC, Filer singled and doubled and drove in 3 runs, Becky Brahaney collected 3 hits, Courtney Chutz ripped a pair of hits and had 4 RBI, and Phylicia King registered 2 hits, 3 stolen bases and 2 runs scored.
“Chelsea pitched her best game of the year,” said Grove City coach Shawnee Denbow. “She and the team just keep getting better and better.”
Jessica Trott went the distance for Mercer. She walked 1 and gave up 12 hits.
