Hickory High tennis team fought Fairview before falling 4-1 Thursday in the District 10 Class AA team championships at Pennbriar Athletic Club, Erie.
“A lot of those (matches) could’ve gone either way,” noted Hickory head coach Diane Vermeire.
Hickory sophomore Sean Zippie took D-10 singles titlist Jon Knoll to 3 sets, dropping the opener 6-2 before posting back-to-back 7-6(4), 6-1 wins for Hickory’s lone triumph. Zippie reported his season singles slate is 15-3.
The Hornets concluded the campaign 10-0 in regular-season matches and as the D-10 Region 1 champion, and as Vermeire noted, “We’re young and have several of our players coming back next year.”
Vermeire also lauded county contingents for their play in recent postseason action.
“Congratulations to the Mercer County schools for their show at singles and doubles districts. ... Hickory, Grove City and Greenville were represented through the quarterfinals in the singles (last) Saturday. And doubles played in the semifinals (Wednesday). Grove City was defeated by Fairview (for the championship) in a 2nd-set tiebreak.”
