YPSILANTI, Mich. — Fawn Miller will be taking on the world later this month.
The Lakeview High rising senior won the javelin competition Wednesday at the USA Track and Field Assn. Youth Nationals Trials at Eastern Michigan University.
Miller mustered a throw of 153 feet, 2 inches, approximately 4 feet further than the runner-up, Lady Sailors’ skipper Greg Slatcoff reported. He said there were 9 competitors.
By virtue of her victory Miller has qualified for the World Youth Nationals, July 9-15 in Italy. She will leave Friday, Slatcoff said.
According to Slatcoff, the top two placewinners from Wednesday’s trials will make the 55-athlete USA squad that will compete in the Worlds. All of these athletes are 16- or 17-years old.
“She did very well and, again, I’m really pleased with the consistency in her throws,” Slatcoff said. “She just keeps getting better and better. ... I’m happy with what she accomplished (Wednes)day.
Miller is the reigning 2-time PIAA Class AA titlist and record-holder, competed in the U.S. Olympic Team trials last summer, and won the high school division at this past spring’s prestigious Penn Relays.
