Michael Klaric III, Kennedy Catholic High senior golf star, fired a 71 to win the 17-18 division of the Kings Restaurant’s/Tri State PGA Junior Golf Player of the Year Championship at Mystic Rock Golf Course Monday.
Klaric finished ahead of Justin Marcinizyn with 72 and Kevin Koerbel (74).
Some other locals placed in the event at the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Farmington, Pa.
Klaric’s brother Roman was 3rd in the boys 14-under with 79, won by Brent Rinker of Slippery Rock with 75. Renee Cantrell of Sharpsville was 3rd in the girls 14-15 class with 89, while Hermitage’s Shannon Gramley took 7th with a 95. Kendall Allen of Pittsburgh posted 76 to win that group.
Brent Bigler of Washington won the boys 15-16 division with a 67, while McKeesport’s Sarah Heimlich won with girls 16-18 group with 80.
The Kings/Tri-State Players of the Year, determined by total points in a series of tournaments, are as follows: Ryan Fichter, Pittsburgh, 18; Bigler, 16; Rinker, 14; Haygen Mowder, Martins Ferry, Ohio, 18; Allen, 14.
The juniors will be honored at the Tri-State Section PGA Champions of Golf Dinner on Oct. 16 at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort.
Klaric is the winner of four Herald-Tam O’Shanter Junior Golf Championships. He is the first person to achieve that feat in the 60-year history of the event.
