Most Mercer County teams got of to good starts Friday night. In a key local matchup, Hickory edged backyard rival Sharpsville, 20-13.

In other contests it was: Wilmington rocking Brentwood, 42-7; Greenville edged North East, 12-10; Mercer downed Mercyurst Prep, 25-14; Grove City toppled Erie Central, 21-12; West Middlesex slipped past Union, 27-20; Union City zipped Lakeview, 14-0; Northwestern beat Reynolds, 16-6; and over in Ohio, Brookfield fell to Crestview, 42-0.

ä West Middlesex 27 Union Twp. 20 — In Lawrence County, the visiting Big Reds rolled for the road win, but needed Kyle Allen’s 10-yard fourth-quarter run to ensure success.

West Middlesex mustered a 13-6 first-quarter lead, extended its edge to 21-12 by the break, and maintained a 21-20 margin before Allen added to earlier scoring sprints of 45 and 35 yards. Also for West Middlesex, Kyle Wimer and Kyle Beck combined for a 42-yard first-quarter touchdown toss. Also, Wimer whipped a 2-point conversion to Nate Ash after Allen’s 2nd score, at the time moving Middlesex to a 21-6 margin in the 2nd stanza.

For Union Twp., Jason Burkes burst for 3- and 1-yard TD runs and Damian Trott took in a 35-yard TD toss from Mike Pelto. The latter lent the subsequent 2-point PAT run.

ä Greenville 12, North East 10 — At North East, theTrojans of coach Brian Herrick pulled out an exciting non-league victory in the final minute.

Trailing 10-6, Nate Houpt pulled in a 4-yard touchdown pass from David Holiga with 32 seconds remaining.

Greenville opened the scoring in the first period with a 29-yard TD burst by Nick Weaver. But North East answered with a 23-yard field goal by Zac Henry. The Grapepickers grabbed the lead early in the fourth frame on a 39-yard sprint by talented Jeff Carniewski and Henry converted the point after.

That set up the late game heroics by the Trojans.

Carniewski rushed for 220 yards on 29 carries. Dylan Zuschlag led the Trojans with 60 yards on 10 totes.

ä Mercer 26, Mercyhurst Prep 14 — At Mercyhurst College, the Mustangs rallied from a 14-0 deficit to post a season-opening victory as senior Rawlins Huntley scored a trio of 2nd-half touchdowns.

The Lakers led 14-0 after the opening quarter on a pair of 1-yard TD runs by Marshall Huntsman and PATs by Ryan Cammidge.

Mercer cut the lead to 14-6 on a 7-yard TD pass from Andrew Erdos to Terrence Davis. The PAT failed.
