This year’s Wilmington edition — and this is a frightening prospect for opponents to ponder — may be better than its immediate past predecessors. And for those teams coming off opening-week losses who harbor playoff aspirations, that’s not a yellow penalty flag you’re seeing, it’s a red flag — the season’s must-win stage already has arrived.
Tonight’s Games
Greenville (1-0) at Wilmington (1-0), 7 p.m.
During the past 4 seasons Greyhounds gridders have garnered a composite 43-7 ledger, with back-to-back appearances in the PIAA Class AA western regional title tilt.
Wilmington whipped Brentwood last week (42-7), amassing a 328-73 edge in total offense without the benefit of a 100-yard rusher or passer. Six 6 different players scored. Conversely, the Trojans triumphed at North East (12-10) with 32 ticks to play.
In their last two tussels the Hounds hammered Greenville 37-0 (’07) and 34-7 (’06), in addition to a 13-3 win in ’05. The last time the Trojans topped Wilmington was in ’04 (20-10).
The game is being broadcast on WLLF (The River, 96.7 FM), with Jeff Wimer and Chris Burtch calling the action, as well as WGRP (AM 940), with Kent Bell and Dick Rickert making the call. The latter also may be streamed at www.classiccountry940.com.
Reynolds (0-1) at Sharon (1-0), 7 p.m.
The Tigers returned to a tailback-oriented offense en route to topping Farrell last week (14-7), as Ronnie Howard hurdled the century mark. The Raiders were competitive in a loss at Northwestern (16-6), allowing only 80 total yards (though gaining only 88); however, a turnover and special teams gaffe resulted in the winning Wildcats’ 2 TDs.
The game will be broadcast on NewsTalk 790 (WPIC AM), with Mark Slezak and Bob Greenburg calling the action, and the game will be streamed at www.790wpic.com.
Mercyhurst Prep (0-1) at West Middlesex (1-0), 7 p.m.
