Mudrey honored; Titans to meet Grove City College on Saturday
Former Hickory High standout Allison Mudrey has been selected as the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference tennis player of the week.
Mudrey, a junior Penn State-Behrend business major, was chosen after winning all eight singles and doubles matches in recent Lady Lions’ wins over SUNY-Fredonia, Westminster College and Penn State-Altoona.
The reigning AMCC women’s tennis player of the year, Mudrey, playing at first singles and second doubles, has led PSU-Behrend to a 4-0 conference, 12-0 ledger thus far this season.
One of the Lady Lions’ co-captains, Mudrey’s sensational sophomore season included a 14-1 singles and 11-1 doubles ledger (teaming with fellow co-captain, senior Mindy Calvert). The 2005 squad won nine of its final 10 matches, according to the university’s web site, and ninth-year coach Jeff Barger said of this season’s prospects,
“It is always tough to defend the title, but we have a great mix of returning talent, combined with a couple of strong first-year athletes. I feel like we have a great shot at staying on top in the AMCC.”
Mudrey played scholastically for Hornettes head coach Diane Vermeire.
PSU-Behrend, the 2-time defending conference champion, hosts Chatham College 1 p.m. Saturday.
ä The 87th meeting of the Westminster-Grove City college football rivalry is set for 1:30 p.m. Saturday at GCC’s Robert E. Thorn Field.
Westminster leads the all-time series — which dates back to 1892 — 47-31-8, including the last 6 straight (14-13 in ’05 on Brett Myers’ 14-yard TD toss to Brett Ziegler with 16 seconds remaining).
The Wolverines (0-2, 0-3) are seeking their first win over Westminster (0-0, 1-2) since 1979 (the teams did not meet from 1984-99, according to the Presidents’ Athletic Conference web site).
The game will be broadcast on WWNW (88.9 FM) in New Wilmington, WSAJ (91.1 FM) in Grove City, streamed on www.titanradio.net and www.gcc.edu/sports, and tape-delayed on WCN TV (Westminster Cable Network) 730 p.m. Sunday.
ä Lock Haven University freshman quarterback Ilio DiPaolo has been named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division offensive player of the week.
DiPaolo anchored a second-half cross-over comeback against Mansfield University (0-3), helping give the Bald Eagles (1-3) their first victory of the season, 24-21. With 1:52 left in the game, DiPaolo threw a 69-yard bomb to set up the game-winning TD. He also successfully ran for the ensuing 2-point conversion. In his second career start, he completed 19 of 37 passes for 226 yards, the highest output for a Lock Haven quarterback since ’04.
DiPaolo and the Bald Eagles will visit PSAC-West rival California University (2-2), 6 p.m. Saturday.
The Athol Springs, N.Y. native is a cousin of Mela Garofalo and Lucy Yanek, both of Sharpsville.
