Roundup: Mercer blanks Sharpsville; Farrell rolls past WM

Herald Staff reports

In a pair of big Region 1-A games on Friday, coach Pat McClearn’s Mercer Mustangs beat the Blue Devils, 21-0, in Sharpsville while the Farrell Steelers handed West Middlesex a 36-7 loss.

In other games, Greenville rolled past Oil City, 35-14; Grove City defeated Hickory, 20-6; Kennedy Catholic fell to Conneaut Lake, 21-12; and Girard routed Brookfield, 35-7.

ä Mercer 21, Sharpsville 0 — At McCracken Field, the Mustangs (3-1, 5-1) limited Sharpsville (4-1, 4-2) to just 49 yards of total offense — 20 coming on their final possession.

The Mercer defensive line of Tyler Baroni, Ray Dominguez, Cody Frey, Rich McCullough, Nick Nan and Nick Ream dominated the Sharpsville front wall, recording several tackles for loss.

“I thought we played well up front tonight,” Mercer coach Pat McClearn said. “That’s a good team over there and they have three really good backs. I thought we did a decent job.”

The Mustangs quieted a large Sharpsville homecoming crowd right off the bat when Andy Reda returned the opening kickoff 75 yards for an early 6-0 lead after the PAT failed.

“That was big,” McClearn said. “That’s the first return (for a touchdown) that we’ve had in a bunch of games now. That’s one of our goals each week. That was a big play. It kind of took a little wind out of their sails.”

The lead stayed that way until Terrence Davis capped a 3-play, 53-yard drive with a 25-yard touchdown run. Davis added the 2-point conversion for a 14-0 cushion.

“Terrence popped the big run (to put Mercer up 14-0), but we had a couple big first down pickups with Andrew (Erdos) reading the midline,” McClearn said. “I thought our offensive line did a good job of moving people off the ball. That’s what we have to do to win.”

On its next possession, the Mustangs sealed the game with a 3-yard Andrew Erdos TD with 1:46 left.

Erdos led a balanced Mercer rushing attack with 81 yards on 14 totes, while Davis tacked on 80 yards on 11 carries. Herbie Hennegan (44) and Rawlins Huntley (31) combined for another 75 more.

“It took us a while to get going with the fumbles in the first half and silly penalties,” McClearn said. “We talked to (the players) about being calm and play our style of football, which is what we try to do each week. Sometimes, it takes a little longer to get into it.”

Sharpsville had as many first downs off Mercer penalties (2) as they earned offensively (2) and saw its four-game winning streak come to an end. Marcus Llewellyn led the Devils with 24 yards rushing on 9 carries. — By Allied News Sports Editor Corey J. Corbin.
