Thiel College senior forward Joe Herrmann, a Jamestown High graduate, has been named a pre-season honorable mention All-American selection by D-III News, the country’s top Division III basketball publication.

Herrmann, an All-Presidents’ Athletic Conference first team selection last season, started all 25 games for the Tomcats (2-10, 5-20) a year ago. He led the PAC in scoring (18.7 ppg.), rebounds (9.1 rpg.), blocked shots (41) and was 3rd in both minutes played (33.8 mpg.) and field goal percentage (56.3).

Herrmann became the program’s 7th 1,000-point scorer last season and sits at 1,107 points. He needs 577 to pass A.H. Davis (2003 graduate) as the program’s all-time leading scorer.

Coach Tim Loomis’ Tomcats open the 2007-08 season on Nov. 16 at the Cron Classic at La Roche College. Thiel will face Marymount University (Va.) in the opening game.

PAC Tennis

Championships

Grove City College accumulated 50 points to win the team title at the PAC Championships on Saturday at Pennbriar Athletic Club in Erie. The other team scores were Westminster (33), Waynesburg (29), Washington & Jefferson (11), Chatham (10), Bethany (2) and Thomas More (0).

Grove City’s Tamara Nations was named PAC player of the year while Westminster’s Scott Renninger was tabbed coach of the year.

Nations defeated Westminster April Scudere, a Brookfield High product, for the No. 1 singles championship. The scores were 6-4, 6-2.

GCC’s Erin Bennett, Kristin Taylor and Chris Sager won titles at Nos. 4, 5 and 6 singles, respectively.

Grove City also swept the doubles titles. Nations and Bennett captured first doubles, Kait Garcia and Sager won at No. 2 doubles and Taylor teamed up with Julie Bellissimo to take third doubles.

At second doubles, Garcia and Sager defeated Westminster’s Scudere and Hilary Newman, 9-8 (5).

Westminster’s Natalie Hruska, a Hickory High product, earned 3rd place at No. 6 singles. She defeated Chatham’s Megan Padula, 6-0, 6-0.
