D-10 Soccer Playoffs: Hickory advances; GC, Hornettes ousted

Area teams went 1-for-3 on Monday as the District 10 soccer playoffs kicked off.
The lone winner was the Hickory boys, who notched a thrilling shootout victory over the Warren Dragons.
The Hickory girls fell to McDowell, 5-0, while Central Tech ousted the Grove City boys, 2-0.
BOYS
Class AA
ä Hickory 3, Warren 2 (2OT), Hickory wins shootout 4-2 — At Corry High School, the Hornets (15-3-1) trailed 2-0 at the half but rallied to tie the game and then ousted the Dragons (16-1-1) in a SO.
The last time Warren lost was to Hickory in last season’s playoffs. It was the 2nd straight year that the Hornets ousted the Region 2 champions.
On Monday, Scott and Mark Schoenborn both scored to give Warren a 2-0 lead at the break.
Hickory cut the lead to 2-1 at the 30:47 mark when Matt Durisko scored on a header off a corner kick by Sean Zippie.
The Hornets tied the game with 2:34 left in regulation when Brandon Ward scored on a header off a corner kick by Zippie.
Following a pair of scoreless 15-minute overtime periods, James Black, Ward, Ante Mesin and Zippie scored in the shootout.
Troy Burns and Mark Schoenborn scored for Warren. Mark is the all-time scorer in school history with over 30 goals this seasons and came close to 100 career points.
Hickory outshot the Dragons 21-12. Matt Durisko and Nick Somerfield split time in goal for the Hornets.
Hickory advances to face the winner of Monday’s late game between Slippery Rock and Gen. McLane. That game will be Wednesday at a site and time TBA.

ä Central Tech 2, Grove City 0 — At Harbor Creek High School’s Paul J. Weitz Stadium, the Falcons (11-6-1) ousted the Eagles (13-4-2).
Game information was not submitted to The Herald.
GC only allowed 10 goals this season and posted shut-outs in 12 of 19 matches. The Eagles hadn’t allowed a goal since Oct. 17 when they suffered a 1-0 loss to North East.
Central’s top players were Jordan M. Hart, who had 25 goals this season, and goalkeeper Jordan T. Hart.
Central advances to face the winner of Monday night’s Harbor Creek vs. Titusville game, which started late at Corry High due to the Hickory-Warren shootout match.
GIRLS
Class AAA
ä McDowell 5, Hickory 0 — At Wilmington High School, the young Hornettes’ squad hung tough, battling McDowell to a 0-0 tie at the half, but surrendered five 2nd-half goals in dropping their playoff opener.
Hickory closes out the season with a 15-3-1 record while McDowell improves to 16-3.
Hornette goalkeeper Harley Hrifko made 12 saves in the loss.
“I’d like to thank my seniors (Carly Leonard, Elise Baldarelli and Emily Segarra),” said Hickory coach B.J. Rudge. “I’d like to thank them for their hard work and leadership. We have a young team and got some good experience this season to build on for next year.”
McDowell, which has won the District 10 title 4 of the past 5 years, advances to play Region 2 champion Titusville.
