ä Grove City 40, Sharpsville 37 —
At the Devils’ Den in Sharpsville, the visiting Lady Eagles escaped with their record remaining unscathed; however it was not until the final 2.6 ticks to play.

With Sharpsville on the short end of a 38-37 margin, Grove City committed the last of its 7 second-half turnovers with 27 seconds left.

Sharpsville skipper Jeff Hanley hailed a timeout to diagram a play. But a missed layup with approximately 7.3 ticks resulted in Grove City gaining a loose-ball rebound. Alexis Deyarmin then knocked down both ends of a 1-and-1 bonus free-throw opportunity to ensure the Lady Eagles’ 4th consecutive conquest.

“We’re very excited to be 4-0, but obviously we’re trying to get ready for region play; it’s going to be very tough this year,” acknowledged Grove City Head Coach T.L. Eller. “We’ve played some tough teams early — Cochranton, Mercer and now Sharpsville — so these have been good confidence-building wins for us.”

Grove City garnered an 18-17 margin at intermission on Brenna Deyarmin’s pair of freebies after the 1st-half clock had expired. But Sharpsville secured a 31-30 edge through 3 quarters as Eugena Davies drained a triple with 31.5 seconds left in the period.

The teams were twice tied in the 4th frame. However the Blue Devils self-destructed, committing 9 fourth-quarter miscues. Conversely, Grove City struggled against Sharpsville’s 1-3-1 matchup zone. The Lady Eagles ended 13 for 44 (29.5 percent) from the field.

Corianne Hyduchak hit 10 of her game-high 13 points after intermission, while Jenn Ferguson fired in 10 tallies and Hailey Hall handed out 4 assists. The Lady Eagles ended 12 for 14 from the free-throw line.

For Sharpsville (0-2), Davies drilled 9 points, Madison Sloan scored 8 and Emily Anderson and Kayla Kurelko combined to evenly divide 14 more. Maddie Przicina, Davis and Kurelko dished out 3 assists apiece, but Sharpsville attempted only 26 shots. Przicina also pulled down a game-high 7 rebounds.

“We knew they were gonna really try to slow it down, try to dicate the tempo, and they did a very good job,” Eller assessed. “We had a hard time getting baskets, which gets us into our press. (The Blue Devils) kept it close, and we had to make some big plays down the stretch to pull it out.

“We got some good looks, but the ball just wasn’t going in the hoop for us. But for us to battle through that, make some big defensive plays and make some foul shots, that’s a nice win,” Eller summarized. — By Ed Farrell, Herald assistant sports editor.

ä Hickory 75, Central Tech 34 — At Erie, the visiting Lady Hornets harvested the road rout, building a 28-13 bulge by the break, then erupting for 31 third-period points.
