Herald staff

---- — The 2013 high school football season kicked off on Friday night with a total of 10 games involving area teams, including the Steel Bowl at Tiger Stadium. And it was a big night for Mercer County area clubs as most rolled to victory.

In other games played locally, Wilmington beat West Middlesex, 28-10; Greenville defeated North East, 21-3; Grove City topped Carrick, 34-12; Mercer beat Eisenhower, 41-13; Reynolds earned a 41-6 victory vs. Maplewood and Brookfield defeated Springfield Local in a thriller, 30-27.

Three area teams hit the road Friday to open their campaigns — Lakeview beat the Bears, 63-6, in Union City; Sharpsville defeated Moniteau, 35-12, and Hickory rolled past Strong Vincent, 49-7 at Veterans Stadium in Erie.

Kennedy Catholic hosts Bradford at Butala Stadium today at 1 p.m.

Following are staff reports:

ä Wilmington 28, West Middlesex 10 — At Big Reds Stadium in West Middlesex, coach Terry Verrelli kicked off his 35th season as head coach of the Hounds with a win over WM.

Wilmington took a 7-0 lead in the 1st quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run by Jake Sotter. James Gardner tacked on the PAT.

West Middlesex cut the lead to 7-3 in the 2nd quarter on a 30-yard field goal by Chandler Tyillian. Wilmington then went up 14-3 on a 64-yard TD pass from Cody Llewellyn to Riley Kollar. Kyler Lum booted the extra point.

WM cut the lead to 14-10 before halftime on a 1-yard run by quarterback Trey Staunch and Tyillian’s PAT.

Llewellyn and Marc Peoples hooked up for a pair of scores in the 2nd half for the Hounds. They connected on a 15-yard scoring strike in the 3rd quarter and a 30-yard TD pass in the 4th. Gardner added the PAT in the 3rd frame and Lum, who is a standout on the girls soccer team, booted the PAT in the 4th.

Reese Bender (10-63) and Josiah Bloise (15-50) led the Hounds running game. Llewellyn was 8-of-15 for 147 yards and Peoples led the team in receiving with 4 catches for 71 yards.

Luke Hemminger led the ground game for the Big Reds with 46 yards on only 1 carry. Staunch finished 9-of-17 for 119 yards and Dillon Fair was the top receiver with 6 grabs for 72 yards.

It was the first game for new WM coach Ed Roberson, who was on Jason McElhaney’s staff for 6 seasons and played for Jim Wildman at Sharon.

ä Mercer 41, Eisenhower 13 — At Mercer, the Mustangs of Coach Pat McClearn had an impressive debut as they routed the northern club.

The Mustangs scored the first two touchdowns of the contest and never looked back in the romp.

T.J. Peters got the Mustangs on the board first when he intercepted a Knights pass and returned it 25-yards for a tally. Zane O’Brien followed with a 1-yard TD burst, his first of three scores on the night. His other tallies came on a pair of 3-yard run.

Mercer quarterback Logan Clarke tossed a pair of TDs, 11 yards to Jarred Davis and 9 yards to Dylan Angermeier. Clarke had a big day with his feet as well, rushing for 158 yards to go with 155 passing.

Both Ikes’ scores were by Alex Johnson on a run of 74 yards and a recepition from Rob Wilston good for 50 yards.

ä Grove City 34, Carrick 12 — The Eagles overcame nearly 100 yards in penalties and countless other mistakes to cruise past the visiting Raiders at Grove City High School’s Forker Field.

Despite being whistled for 85 yards on 9 infractions, GC nearly amassed 400 with a 393 yard offensive effort behind the balanced rushing of senior Foster Reznor (10 totes for 106 yards), senior Jared Sample (8 for 63), senior Jesse Hodge (6 for 47), senior Tanner Lucido (6 for 42) and junior Jared Graham (6 for 41).

Hodge, in his first varsity appearance, scored on runs of 4, 15 and 7 yards, respectively, while Reznor posted the other 2 Grove City scores on a 1-yard burst and a 26-yard aerial from Graham.

Meanwhile, senior defensive linemen Grant Craig and Warren Marlowe set up camp in the Carrick backfield with Craig receiving credit for 2.5 sacks and Marlowe having several tackles for loss.

For Carrick, Davon Cruse led the way with 74 yards through the air of 5-of-9 passing — Information submitted by Herald Sports Correspondent Corey J. Corbin.

ä Sharpsville 35, Moniteau 12 — At Moniteau, the defending District 10 Class A champion Blue Devils broke open a close game in the second half and rolled to the triumph.

Despite suspending 4 starters, Sharpsville had a strong performance including a 3-touchdown night for Devils’ junior Tyler Wansack. Wansack scored on a 46-yard run in the opening stanza to put Sharpsville in the lead then in the second half put the game on ice with TD runs of 65 and 1 yards.

Other scores for Coach Paul Piccirilli’s Devils came on an 85-yard kickoff return by Tyrin Peavy and an 8-yard run by track star Tyler Confer. Nathan Lutz connected on all 5 PAT kicks.

Wansack rushed for 164 yards and Confer rumbled for 140.

For Moniteau, both scores were by Skiver on runs of 35 and 6 yards.

ä Hickory 49, Strong Vincent 7 — At Erie Veterans Memorial Stadium it was no contest as the two-time defending District 10 Class AA champ Hornets routed the Colonels.

Coach Bill Brest’s Horners opened the scoring with a safety and piled up an early 16-0 lead after scores by Anthony Cannone on a 4-yard pass from Matt Voytik and a 44-yard punt return by Devon Tindell.

Dequan Lewis had 3 scores on passes of 15, 15 and 12 yards from Voytik. Charles Carr hit paydirt on a 62-yard run.

Lou Derloni led the rushing attack for Hickory with 104 yards on 13 carries. Jordan Wombacker nailed 4 extra point kicks and punted twice for 101 yards, a strong 50.5 yards per punt average. On defense, Austin Aikens, Lewis and Wombacker each had 4 tackles.

ä Greenville 21, North East 3 — At Stewart Field, Greenville, the host Trojans triumphed, snapping a 4-year drought against the Grapepickers.

Nick Black burst in from 3 yards out in the 1st frame, giving Greenville an early edge, the Matt Jones tossed a 44-yard 2nd-quarter touchdown to Luke Houpt.

North East eased within 14-3 at intermission on Mike Macauley’s 20-yard field.

However with 10:27 left, Tyler Fattman fired a 70-yard TD to Ben Reiser and Casey Eells tacked on the 3rd of his trio of PATs.

Greenville and North East now have split 8 meetings since 2006.

ä Reynolds 41, Maplewood 7 — At Transfer, the host Raiders made new head coach Josh Mull’s debut a success with their 2nd straight season-opening mauling of Maplewood.

Mike Millero mustered a 13-carry, 129-yard, 3-TD rushing performance for Reynolds, while Jake Leipheimer lent 93 yards rushing on only a handful of carries, with 3- and 59-yard scoring sprints. Also, Adam Ballish broke loose for another 76 of the Raiders’ 327 yards rushing.

Dane Barker’s 6-run accounted for the visiting Tigers’ lone TD.

ä Brookfield 30, Springfield Local 27 — At Brookfield, the Warriors of Coach Randy Clark put on a furious fourth quarter rally to defeat the visitors in a thriller.

Kasey Tingler booted a 36-yard field goal with 2 seconds remaining in the game to snap a 27-all deadlock and end an offensive battle. Brookfield trailed 20-6 heading into the final frame, but outscored Springfield 24-7 in the final frame.

The Warriors trailed 20-0 late in the second quarter, but quarterback Augustus Necastro hooked up with Jamar Tarver for a 16-yard touchdown with no time left in the half.

In the fourth quarter, scoring for Brookfield were: Joe Clark on a 5-yard run, Nate Morrison on a 5-yard sprint and Necastro on a 21-yard burst. Tingler connected on PAT kicks after all 3 scores.

For Springfield, Mike Allgower scored on a 59-yard pass from Hunter Snyder and Snyder connected with Mark Schuler on a 9-yard TD aerial. Snyder also hit paydirt on a 35-yard run, while Ryan Kohler scored on a 45-yard run.

ä Lakeview 63, Union City 6 — At Union City, Blake Reddick rushed for 272 yards on only 10 carries and scored 5 touchdowns as the Sailors stomped the Bears.

Reddick scored on runs of 25, 45, 28, 47 and 30 yards in the 1st half. Brandon Rice, Zach Bigley, Reddick and Zach VanDusen converted 2-point conversion runs after his scores. VanDusen also booted a PAT.

In the 3rd quarter, Bigley scored on an 11-yard run and VanDusen rumbled for a score from 35 yards out. Marquis Spence tacked on both of the 2-point conversions.

Lakeview’s final points of the night were tallied by Tanner Reddick in the 4th quarter. He scored on a 5-yard run and then added the 2-point conversion.
