MERCER COUNTY — A pair of District 10 Region 1-A games involving four Mercer County clubs accounted for the local high school football action Saturday. Following are game results:

ä Farrell 35, Kennedy Catholic 0 — After a season-opening Steel Bowl shutout of Sharon, Farrell High football aficionados may have been concerned a letdown was imminent as the Steelers visited Kennedy Catholic for a Saturday matinee. They need not have worried.

Dewayne Burns’ 17-carry, 161-yard rushing performance included a 67-yard, 1st-quarter scoring sprint, and coupled with the Steelers’ stout defense resulted in a 35-0 Region 1-A opening win.

It was the 2nd straight shutout to start the season for skipper Jarrett Samuels’ Steelers.

At Butala Stadium, Hermitage, Kennedy Catholic (0-1, 0-2) could mount only 94 total yards of offense — almost as much as Farrell lost in penalties (10 for 92). KC also committed 2 miscues, one of which resulted in Malik Graham’s 84-yard, 2nd-quarter interception return for a touchdown.

Also for Farrell (1-0, 2-0), Brandon Gavins garnered touchdown runs of 19 and 2 yards in the 2nd and 4th frames, while Rob Guelledge and Tyrone Archie collaborated on a 23-yard TD toss that helped stake the Steelers to a 28-0 margin at intermission.

Guelledge completed 4 of 5 pass attempts for 47 yards, part of the Steelers’ 257-yard total. Gavins garnered 43 yards rushing on only a half-dozen totes. Defensively for Farrell, Alex Meyers and Guelledge pilfered passes.

Keying Kennedy Catholic was Zach Zehner’s 36 yards rushing. But the Golden Eagles ended with 10 penalties for 77 yards in losses. Tyler Moore recovered a Farrell fumble for KC, while Kahliq Ragster and Blase Hudson had quarterback sacks. — By Ed Farrell, Herald assistant sports editor.

ä Mercer 6, Sharpsville 0 — It was a tough weekend for 2-time District 10 champs. Class AA kingpin Hickory was dumped by Greenville Friday night. Then on Saturday, the A champ Blue Devils bowed at Mercer.

Mercer got on the boards early in the Region 1-A opener thanks to a miscue by the Blue Devils. Devils QB Nick Henwood was hit in the backfield and coughed up the ball and Mustang Brayton Edwards scooped it up and raced 41 yards to paydirt. The PAT kick was blocked.

Later in the period, the Mustangs returned the favor with a fumble at their own 28 that was recovered by Devils’ P.J. Campoli. However, a Luke Henwood pass was picked off by Luke Leonard to end any threat.

That set the tone for several other turnovers to follow as the two clubs battled it out in a hard-hitting conflict. In fact, late in the half the Devils picked up a fumble in Mercer territory and drove it to a 3rd-down at the Mustang 5-yard line with little time left.

But Edwards broke through and sacked Luke Henwood and time ran out before Sharpsville could get off a field goal attempt.

Early in the fourth quarter, Sharpsville appeared to score a TD on a run by Tyler Wansack. But a holding penalty negated the touchdown and backed up Sharpsville for a first-and-goal at the 12. The Mustangs defense came up big and after there stops, forced a 29-yard field goal attempt by the Devils. But the kick went wide and Mercer took over at its own 20.

With just over a minute to go in the game, Sharpsville had a last chance after stopping Mercer on a 4th-down play at the Devils 25. But the Sharpsville drive into Mercer territory ended on an interception by Zane O’Brien and the Mustangs prevailed.
