Roundup: GC, Sharon grab Region 5-AAA wins

- — BOYS BASKETBALL

ä Grove City 72, Farrell 69 —
At Grove City, coach Don Fee’s Eagles moved to 8-7 in Region 5-AAA and 13-7 overall with the 3-point upset over the Steelers (10-3, 16-3).

GC jumped out to an 18-13 lead after the opening 8 minutes, but Farrell clawed back and held a slim 32-30 advantage at halftime. GC would then outscore Farrell 22-19 in the 3rd quarter and 20-18 in the 4th.

Derek Turner drained 6 treys en route to 29 points for Grove City while Danny Torok and Foster Reznor had 15 each.

Chris James led the way for Farrell with 21 points, Ike Jones bucketed 14 and Tyrone Archie added 10 markers.

ä Sharon 68, Slippery Rock 58 — At “The Rock Box” in Slippery Rock, the Tigers (6-8, 9-11) led 18-12 at the end of 1 and 43-26 at the break and held on for the Region 5-AAA victory.

Jason Austin rifled in a game-high 21 points for Sharon and Aubray Jennings registered a dozen points.

Ryan Dutton paced the Rockets (1-12, 5-14) with 19 points and Brady Kadlubek tallied 17.

ä West Middlesex 89, Mercer 50 — At West Middlesex, coach Chad Mild’s Big Reds drained 13 treys and rolled to a perfect 10-0 in Region 2-AA and 15-5 overall with the win over the Mustangs (6-5, 11-9).

Christian Porterfield buried 5 treys en route to 25 points for West Middlesex while Trey Staunch scored 21 and Ryan Dogan bucketed 17, which also included 5 three-pointers.

Staunch had a double-double with 14 rebounds and Josh Porterfield tallied 8 points and grabbed 11 boards.

Jake Schmid scored a dozen points to lead Mercer and Jonathon Scheidhauer contributed 10 points.

ä Erie First Christian Academy 79, Greenville 70 — At Erie, the Trojans (8-11) fired in 31 points in the 4th quarter, but it wasn’t enough as Greenville suffered a 9-point loss to EFCA (13-8).

Logan Kallay drained 5 treys en route to 17 points for EFCA, which beat Kennedy Catholic, 59-36, on Thursday night in Hermitage.

Also for Erie First, Romeo Kabongo and Luke Hess had 16 points each, Augustine Mathias bucketed 14 and Olusola Valentine Sangoyami, who is 6-foot-11, scored 10 points.

Tyler Fattman led the way for Greenville with 20 points while Trent McErlane tallied 15 and Matt Jones registered 11 markers.

ä Northwestern 49, Reynolds 48 (OT) — At Albion, the Region 4-AA Wildcats (9-11) won a 1-point thriller over the Raiders (14-6).

Coach Dan Kilgore’s Reynolds squad led 13-11 after the opening quarter and 24-19 at halftime. The Raiders led 40-32 after 3 quarters of play, but were outscored 10-2 in the 4th as NW forced the extra session and then were outscored 7-6 in OT.

Corey Shinko, Nate Tewell and Dylan Niedermeyer all had 12 points each for Northwestern.

Garhett Frable led the way for the Raiders with a game-high 17 points. Also, Cory Woods scored 13 and Jake Leipheimer added 10 for Reynolds.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

ä Kennedy Catholic 38, Girard 37 —
At Girard, the Lady Golden Eagles (16-2) trailed by 4 points with 28 seconds left, but Rebekah Kish scored all 5 of her points in a 10-second span to lift KC past Region 4-AA Girard (14-5).

With Girard leading 37-33 with 28 ticks left, Kish buried a 3-pointer and then made a steal on Girard’s possession and was fouled, reported 1st-year KC coach Chris Mele. Kish sank both free throws with 18 seconds left and then the Lady Yellowjackets failed to get off a shot under their own basket.

Tatum Kress led the way for Kennedy Catholic with 13 points and 4 rebounds while Taylor Hood registered 10 points, 5 rebounds and 4 steals.

Also for the Lady Golden Eagles, Kish had 5 points and dished out 3 assists, April Bocian posted 6 points, 4 boards and 2 assists, McKayla Fusco had 2 assists and Alivia O’Brien contributed 2 steals.

Maria Welsh paced Girard with 12 points.

ä Sharpsville 50, Jamestown 16 — At “The Fish Tank” in Jamestown, the Lady Muskies (0-19) held a slim 7-6 lead after the opening 8 minutes, but Sharpsville (8-10) fought back to take a 25-11 lead at halftime and cruised to the non-region win.

Madison Przicina paced Sharpsville with 12 points, 6 assists and 6 steals while Izzy Schell scored 9 points and grabbed 8 rebounds.

MiKayla Keyser was the leading scorer for Jamestown with 8 points.

ä West Middlesex 43, Greenville 25 — At West Middlesex, the Ms. Reds improved to 4-6 in Region 2-AA and 9-11 overall with the win over the Lady Trojans (5-6, 8-11).

Allie Staunch had 13 points, 8 rebounds and 4 steals to pace WM while Morgan Atterholt registered 12 points and 8 boards.

Cameron Leary scored 7 points to lead Greenville, Jessica Fenton grabbed 7 rebounds and Rebecca Fagley added 3 steals.

ä Ursuline 41, Brookfield 39 — At Youngstown, the Lady Warriors (14-6) only trailed 13-12 at halftime and the game was knotted at 36 after 3 quarters of play, but the Lady Irish (9-9) pulled out the win.

Ursuline’s Simone Comer sank 4 field goals and was 13-of-18 from the charity stripe and finished with a game-high 21 points.

Lauren Hawley scored 14 for lead Brookfield and Destiny May tallied 9 markers.

WRESTLING

ä Sharon 64, Slippery Rock 3 — In the opener of a doubleheader dual match at Tiger Gymnasium Saturday — due to weather postponements — the Rockets forfeited 8 matches.

D.J. Templeton (126) and Cory Buchanan (160) won via pin for Sharon while Nick McClimans (152) registered a victory by major decision.

Zane Wolf won the lone match for Slippery Rock by decision at 195 pounds.

ä Sharon 59, West Middlesex 12 — In the nightcap, coach Dave Ciafre’s Tigers improved to 15-5 with the win over the Big Reds.

Markus Coxson (113), Jordan Templeton (132), McClimans (152), Beau Dignall (182) and Brice Laughlin (195) scored falls for the Tigers.

Mitchell Murray (120) and Gator Thompson (220) picked up wins via decision for WM.

ä Franklin 43, Hickory 27 — At “The Hive” in Hermitage Friday, the Knights topped the Hornets (9-3).

Zach Shearer (132), Hunter Cook (152) and Nathan Miller (195) posted pins for Franklin.

Justin Walter (120) and John Sims (160) registered falls for the Hornets, who wrapped up their dual-meet season and now await sections.
