Roundup: GC, Sharon, KC girls grab region wins

Herald staff

---- — Only in high school basketball can a team misfire on its first 9 floor shots, then rally on the road to win by double figures.

Monday night at Sharpsville, visiting Conneaut Area’s advantage from the free-throw line enabled the Eagles to earn a 67-52 District 10 inter-region win.

BOYS BASKETBALL

ä Conneaut Area 67, Sharpsville 52 —
At the Devils’ Den, the visiting Eagles emerged from that 0-for-9 first-quarter shooting funk and 10-4 deficit.

Danny Holcomb hit 9 of his 17 points during the 2nd stanza as the Eagles erupted for 22 points en route to a 26-22 margin at intermission.

Then during the 2nd half Conneaut converted 22 of 31 free-throw attempts, led by Holcomb’s 6-for-8 marksmanship.

“We had a slow start ... we always start slow, but don’t give up. We switched to a zone defense, and it really kind’ve slowed (the Blue Devils) down and helped us out,” summarized Conneaut head coach Bob Leupold.

Class AAA Conneaut Area (6-5) is a merger of the former Linesville, Conneaut Valley and Conneaut Lake schools. Leupold served as Conneaut Valley’s head coach during the past 6 seasons.

“The kids are getting along great,” Leupold related. “We did a lot this past summer to get this kids together, and it’s been great so far.

“I think once we do our numbers again, we’ll probably be double-A, and I think we’ll be in the same region. And I’ve got a good group of younger kids I’m looking forward to working with the next couple of years.”

Keying Conneaut was 6-foot-4 senior post Noah Uplinger’s game-high 24-point, 12-rebound double-double, while Holcomb his for 17 and Sid Smith scored 16 while hauling down 9 caroms. Also, point guard Stephen Martini musterd a handful of assists.

Conneaut connected on 19 of 45 floor shots  (42.3 percent) and converted 26 of 37 freebies (70.2). The Eagles ended with 16 turnovers.

Kyle Kennedy keyed Sharpsville (5-4) with a 17-point, 12-rebound double-double, Jalen Mockabee manufactured 14 points and 9 caroms, and Tyler Luchey lent 11 poitns, 7 rebounds and 3 assists.

But the Blue Devils did not shoot well from the field (20 of 66, 30.3 percent) and did not get to the line nearly as frequently as Conneaut (13 for 20, 65 percen). Sharpsville made 13 miscues and outrebounded Conneaut Area, 43-41. — By Ed Farrell, Herald assistant sports editor.

ä Maplewood 60, Jamestown 39 — At Jamestown, the Tigers (3-8) led 15-10 after the 1st quarter, 30-20 at the break and went on to top the Muskies (0-8) in the non-region affair.

Miller Peters (12), Josh Lake (11) and Justin Dahl (10) scored in double digits for Maplewood.
