Roundup: Sharpsville Invite is set for Saturday

---- — The 12th annual Sharpsville Blue Devil Cross Country Invitational is set for Saturday in Buhl Farm Park.

Meet director Dr. Peter Vilasi said approximately 1,200 runners, representing 46 schools from Erie to Pittsburgh as well as Northeast Ohio, are registered.

This year’s event will begin at 10 a.m. with the varsity girls’ race, followed incrementally by varsity boys, junior varsity girls’ and boys (which may be combined), and middle school girls’ and boys’.

“We look forward to providing a quality race event for the cross country athletes of western Pennsylvania,” Vilasi said.

ä Brookfield 4, Liberty 1 —
At Harding Park, Hubbard, the host Lady Warriors won for the 11th consecutive occasion.

Ashley and Autumn Kirila and Alexandra Plyler swept the singles matches for Brookfield (11-0), while the doubles duo of Leah Bayer-Ana Zarlinski also triumphed for Coach Kevin Boyd.

At Pine Grove Golf Course in Grove City, coach Ralph Sundelin’s Sailors notched a 4-stroke victory over the Golden Eagles.

Chris Palutro fired a 40 to lead Lakeview while Jacob Wilson carded a 42 for Kennedy Catholic.

ä Mercer 181, Conneaut Area 184 — At Oakland Beach, Conneaut Lake, the visiting Mustangs (8-1) mustered the win, led by Brock Watson’s medalist round of 42.

At Mercer, Melissa Shoemaker had 18 points and 24 assists in leading the Lady M’s (4-2) to the sweep, 25-8, 25-12, 25-18.

ä Hickory 1, Slippery Rock 1 (2OT) —
Under the lights at Hornet Stadium, both teams scored in the 1st half and then played to a tie in double-OT.

Nick Tantuo scored for Hickory (3-2-1) off an assist from Evan Montgomery. Gavin McHattie had the lone goal for the Rockets.

Donte Green made 16 saves between the pipes for the Hornets while Jason Bluedorn and Sean Beeching combined for 7 saves for Slippery Rock.
