Roundup: 6 area teams qualify for D-10 soccer playoffs

- — The District 10 soccer tournament commences next week, and Mercer County will be well represented.

In Class AA, Hickory boys will meet Slippery Rock, 7 p.m. Monday at Franklin High. The winner of that pairing of at-large entrants will meet Region 5 champion Harbor Creek on Wednesday at a site and time to be announced. Also Wednesday, Region 2 titlist Wilmington will meet the winner of Monday’s Warren-vs.-Girard match, again, with the site and time TBA.

˝ In boys’ single-A action on Tuesday, at-large Commodore Perry meets Region 3 champion Mercyhurst Prep, 7 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium, Erie, while Region 1 titlist Mercer meets at-large North East at 7 p.m. at Franklin.

ä In the girls’ AA bracket, Region 2 champion Hickory will wait until Wednesday to learn its opponent — Region 5 champ Harbor Creek or at-large Villa Maria — who square off 5 p.m. Monday at Veterans Stadium. Also Monday, Grove City faces Fort LeBoeuf, 5 p.m. at Franklin, with the winner meeting Region 4 champion Mercyhurst Prep on Wednesday.

ä Mercer County has no AAA representatives. In the boys’ bracket. Cathedral Prep faces Central Tech 7 p.m. Monday at Vets Stadium, with the winner meeting McDowell Thursday, site and time TBA, for the title. In the girls’ AAA bracket, Region 6 champion McDowell met at-large Strong Vincent Thursday night in Erie, with the winner advancing to next week’s PIAA playoffs, Tuesday at Brockway.

ä Hickory 10, Oil City 0 —
At “The Oil Field” in Oil City Thursday night, Lauren Bell notched 5 goals and 1 assist and Jackie White had 3 goals, 2 assists and broke a pair of school records in leading the Lady Hornets (10-0, 16-1-1) to victory.

White broke the single-season assists mark (24) and career assists record (59). Both were previously held by 2012 graduate Lauren Costello (24, 58).

Also for Hickory, Sara Suler had 1 goal and 1 assist, Marissa DeJulia registered 1 goal and 2 assists, Isabella Spadafora collected 3 assists, M.K. Bair was credited with 1 assist and Morgan McBride posted her 13th shutout of the season in goal and 42nd of her career.

Region 2 champion Hickory opens the D-10 Class AA playoffs Wednesday at a site and time TBD. They play the winner of Monday’s Harbor Creek vs. Villa Maria match.

ä Hickory 5, Mercer 0 — At Hermitage Wednesday night, the Lady Hornets blanked Mercer. Suler had 4 goals, Bell 1 and Spadafora and White each had 2 assists. McBride earned the shutout.

Coach B.J. Rudge recognized McBride, Chesa Panin and Sophia Fustas on Senior Night for their hard work and dedication to the team.


ä Franklin 6, Sharpsville 3 —
At Franklin Thursday, the Knights (5-13) and Blue Devils closed out their seasons.

Ted Richards and Isaac Drain had 2 goals each for Franklin. Ty Mooney and Dia Beggs had the other goals. Richards (2), Beggs and Smith had assists. Eric Mallard made 2 saves in goal for Franklin.

No stats were reported by Sharpsville.

ä Sharon 4, West Middlesex 0 — At Tiger Stadium, Wednesday, “Senior Night” saw Sharon surge to the shutout.

Seniors Joey Zajac and Eric Mastrianno sparked Sharon (7-10). Zajac tallied once and assisted on 2 scores, while Mastrianno mustered a goal and another senior, Dylan Cerroni, secured an assist. Also for Sharon, Isaiah Pinckney and Aaron Martwinski garnered goals as Sharon shot 27 times. Conversely, Tigers’ goalkeeper Mike Piccirilli faced only 2 shots.

In addition to Zajac, Mastrianno and Cerroni, Jason Clark is Sharon’s 4th senior.

ä Slippery Rock 1, Commodore Perry 0 — Recently at Slippery Rock, Luc LaChance, assisted by Mark Cessar, scored  with 18 seconds remaining in regulation for the match’s lone goal to snap a scoreless stalemate.

Slippery Rock goalkeeper Jason Bluedorn made 4 saves, while his Commodore Perry counterpart Kinser DeMarco made 11 saves.


ä Grove City 3, Hickory 0 —
At “The Eagle’s Nest” in Grove City, GC celebrated “Pink Out Night” with a 26-24, 25-21, 25-14 sweep of Hickory (9-3, 10-4) to wrap up the Region 3 championship.

Hickory: No stats reported. GC: Belle Chiodo 8 points; McKenzie Fagan 5 kills, 10 blocks; Stephanie Risch 19 passes; Jenn Ferguson 12 points, 5 kills; Corianne Hyduchak 12 kills; Jordyn Wyllie 7 kills, 8 blocks; Arianna Sprando 21 assists.

ä West Middlesex 3, Farrell 0 — At E.J. McCluskey Gymnasium, coach Nicki Nych’s Region 1 champion Ms. Reds (14-0, 16-0) swept Farrell, 25-21, 26-24, 25-23.

WM: Tori Roberts 8 points, 11 digs; Aly Andrusky 5 points, 7 kills, 6 digs; Megan Hazlett 22 assists, 8 digs; Marissa Pursel 6 points, 9 kills; Ariel Pratt 8 points; Saige Campbell 5 kills, 5 blocks. Farrell: No stats reported.

ä Sharpsville 3, Kennedy Catholic 1 — On Senior Night at Sharpsville, coach Rosemary Ferguson’s Lady Blue Devils (11-3, 11-6) beat KC, 25-16, 20-25, 25-7, 25-20.
