Sharon High football standout was CAP cadet


- — Funeral services will be Wednesday for Corey Lee Swartz, 663 Spruce Ave., Sharon, who passed away unexpectedly Friday (11-8-13) from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was 17.

Corey was born Dec. 19, 1995, in Sharon, a son of Richard J. Swartz and Melinda Marie Fette Swartz.

A senior at Sharon High School, he worked part time at Long John Silvers restaurant, Hermitage.

Corey loved football and he began playing at the early age of 7 for the Sharon Colts. 

Corey was also a baseball player and standout varsity football player for the Sharon High Tigers, having lettered in both his sophomore and junior years.

He played wide receiver, strong safet, and special teams.

The title of team captain is earned each week by the football player who earns it. Corey was a team captain twice this season.

A lifelong member of the Sons of American Legion Post 162 Sharpsville, he was also a cadet with the National Civil Air Patrol Squadron 122 and its color guard.

A nurse aide, he successfully completed the nurse aide training and competency evaluation program in his junior year. He was also an advocate for children with physical, emotional, behavioral and learning disabilities.

After graduation he was hoping to attend the Pittsburgh Technical Institute, a private two-year post-secondary school in Allegheny County.

He will be sadly missed by his mother Melinda Marie Swartz, with whom he lived; his brother Richard Swartz, at home; three sisters Ashley, Cheryl, and Amber Swartz, all of Sharon; his niece Amara McCoy; and his nephew Taijh McCoy Jr.

Also surviving are: his maternal grandparents, Virginia and Harold Fette, Sharon; his father Richard John Swartz and his paternal grandparents Richard and Cheryl Swartz, all of Franklin; and several cousins including a special cousin Laurel Porterfield, Farrell.

In lieu of flowers, a fund has been established for his family through the funeral home to help defray funeral expenses.
