Roundup: Tigers 4th at Sharon Duals; Lakeview's Breese wins Fred Bell title

Sharon Duals


The Tiger matmen finished 4th with a 3-2 record on Saturday at the 10-team Sharon Duals inside Tiger Gymnasium.

Franklin Regional went 5-0 to win the duals crown. They were followed by McGuffey (4-1), Fox Chapel (4-1), Sharon (3-2), Brockway (3-2), Valley (2-3), Shaler (2-3), Meadville (1-4), Smethport (1-4) and North East (0-5).

Troy Hejazi (138 pounds) and Cory Buchanan (160) led the way for Sharon with perfect 5-0 records while Markus Coxson (113), Andrew Campbell (132), Giovanne Volpe (170) and Beau Dignall (182) all went 4-1.

Also for the Tigers, Austin Alfreno (126) and Brice Laughlin (195) posted 3-2 records, Jordan Templeton (132-138) was 2-1, D.J. Templeton (120) and Nick McClimans (152) were 2-3, Jason Clark (145) was 1-1 and Thomas Flanders went 0-5 at 220 pounds.

Sharon’s record is now 11-5.

Fred Bell Tournament

Lakeview High heavyweight Sam Breese, who captured the gold medal at the PIAA Championships in Hershey last March, was the only local to win his weight class at the annual Fred Bell Tournament at Grove City High School on Saturday.

Breese recorded the only fall in the finals matches by pinning Cody Cooper of Stroudsburg in 3:12 at 285 pounds.

Jamestown’s Hunter Goodlin and Mohammed Messai both advanced to the finals, but lost. Goodlin dropped a tough 3-0 decision to Alex Lynch of Seneca at 106 pounds while Messai suffered a 5-1 decision to Stroudsburg’s James Palmisano at 182.

Stroudsburg had 8 matmen in the finals (4 wins, 4 losses) and captured the team title with 235 points. They were followed by Redbank Valley (203.5), Gen. McLane (169), Seneca Valley (151), Penns Valley (131), Jamestown (107), St. Marys (105.5), Titusville (105), Cochranton (102.5) and Warren (96.5).

Lariccia’s See Them Rise Showcase

ä Hickory 66, Struthers 34 —
At the Covelli Centre in Youngstown, YSU recruit Nikki Arbanas drained 6 treys en route to 24 points and dished out 5 assists and had 5 steals as coach Jeanette Whitehead’s Lady Hornets improved to a perfect 16-0 on the season with the rout over the Lady Wildcats.

Another Ohio college recruit Holly Grober (Walsh) registered 17 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Also, Nicole LaCava had 7 points and 6 boards, Megan Chess collected 5 points and dished out 8 assists and Jasmine Shephard added 2 points and 3 steals.

Brittaney Zupko led the way for Struthers with 15 points.

ä Seneca 52, Greenville 37 — At Greenville, coach Jen Fagley’s Lady Trojans dropped to 7-7 on Saturday with the non-region loss to the Lady Bobcats (10-3).

Amanda Sonney fired in 21 points to lead Seneca and Katie Teed added 11 points.

Casslyn Holder was the leading point-getter for the Lady Trojans with 13.

ä Saturday’s Girard at Sharpsville non-region game was postponed due to the weather. No makeup date was announced.

BOYS BASKETBALL

ä Farrell 70, Franklin 60 —
At “The Castle” in Franklin Saturday night, coach Roland Shannonhouse’s Steelers improved to 9-1 in Region 5-AAA and 14-1 overall with the 10-point win over the Knights (3-6, 6-8).

Chris James fired in 22 points to lead Farrell while Ike Jones bucketed 15 and Clifton McNair added 13 markers.

Clayton Maxon drained 6 treys en route to a game-high 28 points for Franklin and Kyle Ritchey added 13 markers.

Farrell was coming off a 64-45 win at Slippery Rock on Friday night while the Knights lost to George Junior Republic, 68-55, in Grove City on Friday.

ä Reynolds 50, Wilmington 41 — At Transfer Saturday night, the Raiders (4-3, 11-4) held a slim 9-7 lead after the opening 8 minutes, but outscored the Hounds 20-12 in the 2nd quarter to pull away for the Region 2-AA victory.

Kyle McConnell and Garhett Frable both had double-doubles for the Raiders. McConnell scored a game-high 17 points and had 11 rebounds while Frable tallied a dozen markers and grabbed 10 boards.

Rocco Fagan scored 10 points to pace Wilmington (4-2, 9-7).

Reynolds routed Jamestown, 70-20, on Friday night in Transfer while the Hounds topped VisionQuest, 86-70, on Friday in New Wilmington.

ä The West Middlesex vs. Canfield game at the Lariccia’s “See Them Rise Showcase” at the Covelli Centre didn’t tip off until 8:30 p.m. and results were not reported prior to deadline.
