Roundup: WM girls capture Union Track Invitational

---- — UNION TWP. — Led by MVPs Rachel DeMaria and Kristen White, West Middlesex High girls track & field team won the 10-team Union Invitational championship Friday afternoon.

The Ms. Reds accumulated 133èpoints to outdistance runner-up Wilmington (120). Lakeview (82è), Mohawk (53), Neshannock (50), Shenango (45), Moniteau (25), New Castle (22), Laurel (21) and Union Area (6) completed the team standings.

“The kids did a great job in adverse conditions,” said WM coach Bob Morris. “It was a cold, windy day.”

DeMaria, who won the shot put (38-7 3/4) and javelin (105) competitions and ended as runner-up in the discus, shared field event MVP laurels with Wilmington’s Tessa Sikora, while White won the 800-meter run (2:31.70) and placed as runner-up in both the 1600- and 3200-meter runs to earn track MVP honors.

Sikora secured victories in the long (15-7 3/4) and triple (32-6) jumps, as well as the 200-meter dash (27.0).

Other individual-event winners from Mercer County included: West Middlesex’s Kelsey Murray (high, intermediate hurdles), Lakeview’s Taylor Reed (100-meter dash) and Courtney King (high jump), and Wilmington’s Julie Falvo (discus).

Wilmington won both the distance and mile relays, with the Lady Hounds’ 4x8 quartet setting a meet mark. Lakeview’s sprint-relay foursome also triumphed.

Neshannock’s Lizzie Manickas established meet marks in the 1600- (5:24.40) and 3200-meter (11:39.20) runs.

BOYS TENNIS

ä Grove City 4, Titusville 1 —
At Grove City, coach Shawn Sowers’ Eagles improved to a perfect 6-0 with the win over the Rockets.

Singles: Matt Welker (GC) def. Shannon Daugherty, 6-1, 6-0; Evan Lowers (GC) def. Eric Maginnis, 6-1, 6-4; Chris Adams (GC) def. Jon Cartney, 6-1, 6-1. Doubles: Alex Langer - Josiah Leach (T) def. BASEBALL

ä Grove City 7, Oil City 1 —
At Grove City’s Memorial Park, Ryan Grace fired a complete-game 5-hitter with 8 strikeouts and 1 walk as the Eagles (5-1) beat OC.

Dustin Maine had 2 singles and 2 RBI for GC, Jordan Anderson singled, doubled and drove in a run and Jesse Hodge and Collin Lawson both had 2 singles and an RBI.

Tony Chmiel suffered the loss for Oil City. He fanned 1, walked 5 and gave up 4 runs on 6 hits in 3ê innings.

Offensively for the Oilers, Wes Lang doubled and Mitchell Eberle ripped a pair of singles.

ä Today’s Wilmington at Sharon game has been moved from 11 a.m. to noon to give crews more time to get the field ready for play.

POSTPONEMENTS

This week’s rainy weather and poor field conditions caused the postponement of more games on Friday. The following were reported to The Herald:
