Roundup: Opening-weekend tipoff tourneys conclude

- — A total of 26 area basketball teams (13 boys, 13 girls) participated in 15 tipoff tournaments this weekend with action wrapping up on Saturday night, as well as action in various wrestling tournaments involving local squads.

Following are results of events reported to The Herald prior to deadline on Saturday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Kittanning Tipoff Championship

ä Hickory 60, Kittanning 32 —
Coach Jeannette Whitehead’s Lady Hornets had an impressive weekend in winning the opening tourney of the season.

“It’s nice to get out of the game with a win,” said Whitehead. “The kids were anxious to get going.”

HIckory (2-0) led 31-13 at intermission and cruised home. Leading the point production were Holly Grober with 19 points, Nicole Lacava 13 and Nikki Arbanas 12. Other stats: Arbanas 5 reb, 3 steals, 2 assits; Grober 11 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 blocks; Shawna Moore 3 steals; Brandi Beader 3 rebounds; Megan Chess 3 rebounds, 2 assists; Lacava 12 rebounds.

Arbanas was named to the all-tourney team while Grober was named tournament MVP.

In the consolation game, Clarion beat Saltsburg.

Sharon Rick Fragle Tipoff Tourney

Championship

ä Gen. McLane 61, Sharon 60 — Seidel sank 2 free throws with 20 seconds remaining as McLane mustered the win.

Seidel scored 18 points, Schaffer 17 and Rodriguez 11 to lead the Lady Lancers (2-0), who were 13 for 22 from the line.

For Sharon (1-1), Tanayja Sanders scoerd 19, Mallory Torr tallied 15 points and Lexi Dabney deposited 10. Mallory Torr tossed in a trio of treys and Dabney drained a pair.

Sharon shot 16 for 24 from the sin stripe.

˝ Farrell beat Riverside 59-51 in the consolation game. Stats were not reported to The Herald.

West Middlesex Kiwanis

Championship


ä Cardinal O’Hara 67, West Middlesex 24 — The Tonawanda, N.Y. club was too powerful for host West Middlesex as the visitors romped to the tournament title. O’Hara jumped out 22-6 in the first quarter and never looked back, leading at halftime 47-17.

Keyonte Edwards had 15 points, while Jontay Walton had 14 to lead the winners. Morgan Atterholt and Allie Staunch each had 8 points to pace the Ms. Reds.

Walton was named to the tournament MVP, while the all-tournament team included Edwards, Atterholt, Staunch, Commodore Perry’s Stephanie Vaughn and Slippery Rock’s Nicole Papley.

Consolation

ä Slippery Rock 67, Commodore Perry 34 —
At West Middlesex, the Lady Rockets led 18-10 after the opening quarter, 37-19 at halftime and rolled past CP.

Marissa Siebka fired in 5 treys en route to 21 points for Slippery Rock. Also, Nicole Papley scored 17 and Stephanie Croll added 11 markers.

Stephanie Vaughn led the way for the Lady Panthers with 11 points.

Rocky Grove Tourney

ä West Forest 50, Reynolds 41 —
At Franklin, Jill Wallace fired in 18 points and Mikaela Bean bucketed 11 as West Forest defeated the Lady Raiders (0-2).

Brooke Bresnan scored 16 to lead Reynolds. On Friday, Rose Stoyer scored 16 in a 67-30 loss to Venango Catholic.

Saturday’s matchups were determined before the tourney began because Reynolds and Rocky Grove are both in Region 1-A.

Mohawk Tipoff Tourney

ä Mercer 62, Moniteau 52 —
At Bessemer, the Lady M’s rallied from a 22-8 first-quarter deficit to tally 54 points over the game’s final 24 minutes.

For cage coach Aaron Cook, Lexi Arkwright annexed 17 points, Megan McKinney mustered 15, and Alexis Mills manufactured 13 more. Mercer (1-1) made 13 of 20 free-throw attempts, including 7 of 9 during the decisive 4th frame.

McCall collected a game-high 24 points for Moniteau, while Greaves garnered 14.

Grove City Kiser Classic

Championship

ä Grove City 63, Cochranton 50 —
The host Lady Eagles ended 24 for 34 from the free-throw line and parlayed that edge to the triumph in the title tilt.

The trio of Jenn Ferguson, Brenna Deyarmin and Corianne Hyduchak hit for 14, 13 and 11 points, respectively, for Grove City (2-0).

Keying Cochranton (1-1) was Kendall Dickson, who drilled a game-high 19 points, while Abby Clulow connected for 11, and Madi Benarding bucketed 10. However, the Lady Redbirds recorded 10-for-16 free-throw shooting.

Consolation

ä Greenville 52, Jamestown 24 —
At “The Eagle’s Nest,” the Lady Trojans led 12-6 after the opening quarter and 32-17 at the break and went on to capture the consy contest.

Casslyn Holder scored 10 points to lead Greenville while MiKayla Keyser had 8 points for Jamestown.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Farrell Julius McCoy Tipoff

Championship

ä Farrell 61, Kennedy Catholic 27 —
In a local finale, it was no contest as the powerful Steelers of Coach Roland Shannonhouse rocked the KC Golden Eagles.

Farrell’s defense held Kennedy to only 8 points in the first half while moving out to a 28-8 margin.

The Steelers had a well-balanced attack with 10 players figuring in the scoring. Clifton McNair led the way with 12 points, while Dewayne Burns added 10. Kennedy was led by Andre Campbell with 9 points.

In the consolation game, Latrobe routed Imani Academy, 77-26.

Farrell’s Ike Jones was chosen as the tourney’s MVP. The All-Tournament Team included Farrell’s Tyrone Archie, Burns, Chris James and Clifton McNair; Kennedy Catholic’s Gerald Zachar and Campbelll; Latrobe’s Lane Loughner and Matt Cullen, and Imani Christian Academy’s Kiev Southern and Denzel Brown.

Sharpsville Tipoff

ä Hickory 66, Sharpsville 30 —
New head coach Geoff Evans saw his club move to 2-0 on the season with an easy victory over neighboring Sharpsville.

The hustling defense of the Hornets swarmed over the Blue Devils, forcing 35 turnovers, many of which led to points.

Hickory led 15-2 after one quarter and moved to 27-8 by half and never looked back.

Anthony Cannone led the way for the Hornets, pumping in 22 points, including 4 treys. Nicholas Tantuo added 10 points. For Sharpsville, Kyle Kennedy had 12 markers.

Tantuo was named tournament MVP, while the all-tourney team included Cannone, Sharpsville’s Kennedy and Sage Berringer, Greenville’s Aaron Emmett and NE Ohio Prep’s Sir Summers. Sharpsville’s Tanner Morris won the award for Academic Excellence.

This was not a traditional tourney and matchups were set prior to the event.

ä Greenville 70, Northeast Ohio Preparatory School 17 — Coach Todd Nehlen’s Trojans moved to 1-1 on the season with the romp over the Ohio charter school.

Greenville jumped out 18-6 after one period and the rout was on. Tyler Fattmen led the way with 13 points and 10 players figured in the scoring. Ben Reiser had 8 assists and Andy Jones 8 rebounds.

Kittanning Tipoff Tourney

Championship

ä Grove City 72, Kittanning —
Led by MVP Derek Turner, All-Tourney Team selection Danny Torok, and the defensive work of Foster Reznor, the Eagles eased to the win in the title tilt.

Turner and Torok tallied 17 and 15 points, respectively, while Reznor relegated Kittanning’s leader scorer Schaffer to 8 points. Reznor rifled in 14 points, also, and he and Torok tossed in 4 and 3 triples, respectively.

Grove City improved to 2-0, while Noah Kunst keyed Kittanning (1-1) with a game-high 22 points.

New Castle Tipoff

Consolation

ä St. Mary’s (Md.) 65, West Middlesex 53 —
At New Castle, Justin Buck fired in 16 points in leading St. Mary’s (Annapolis, Md.) past the Big Reds.

Jelani Jackson had 14 for the Saints while Cory Taylor and Jack Urepko scored 13 each.

Trey Staunch rifled in a game-high 29 points to lead WM. He was named to the all-tourney team.

New Castle played Perry Traditional Academy Saturday night for the tourney title.

Mercer Boosters Tipoff

ä Reynolds 72, Moniteau 38 —
Coach Dan Kilgore’s Reynolds Raiders rolled to a second straight victory, led by Garhett Frable who drilled in 28 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.

In two games, Frable totaled 61 points. Cory Woods added 12 points Saturday, while Dylan McDanel had 5 assists. For Moniteau, Bair had 11 points and Skyler 10.

“It’s nice to start 2-0 and play well twice and beat a couple of pretty good teams,” said Kilgore. “It’s nice to build momentum for the season, but unfortunately we don’t play again until next Friday.”

Unlike traditional tournaments, the pairings were set before the event. Since Reynolds and host Mercer are in the same region, they didn’t want to meet prior to the regular season games.

ä North East 57, Mercer 55 —The Grapepickers produced 16 treys, but had to withstand the host Mustangs’ 20-11 fourth-quarter rally.

Doan Perrin pumped in a a game-high 23 points for the ’Pickers, Mike Macauley mustered 17, and Land Copper copped 10. North East (2-0) ended only 2 for 4 from the free-throw line.

For Mercer (1-1), Logan Clarke collected 16 points, Jon Scheidhauer scored 15, and Nate Guiler garnered 10. The Mustangs, however, made only 10 of 18 free-throw attempts.

Lakeview Tipoff Tourney

Championship

ä Girard 49, George Junior Republic 47 —
At Stoneboro, the Tigers dropped a heartbreaker to the Yellowjackets in the title tilt.

GJR led 9-7 after 8 minutes and Girard took a 20-16 lead at halftime. Girard went up 35-25 after 3 and GJR rallied to outscore the Jackets 22-14 in the 4th quarter, but the rally fell short.

Joe Dunn scored 16 to lead Girard and Mason McCall had 14.

For GJR, Hadari Baker bucketed 15, Malik Gibson registered 14 points and Eric Fuller grabbed 12 rebounds.

Gibson and Baker were named to the all-tourney team.

Consolation

ä Commodore Perry 38, Lakeview 32 —
In the early season’s shocker, the Panthers prevailed in the backyard rivalry — in spite of not having a double-digit scorer.

Lakeview led 13-6 after 8 minutes, but scored only 19 points during the game’s final 24 minutes.

Brandon Rice recorded a game-high 15 points to lead Lakeview (0-2),

Sean Britton bucketed 9 to lead Coach Jon Hildebran’s Panthers (1-1), who posted 10-for-13 free-throw marksmanship. Conversely, the Sailors (0-2) sank only 6 of 10 attempts.
