Reynolds 20-year home mat streak halted

Herald staff

MERCER COUNTY — They say that all good things must end. Even winning streaks of local powerhouse Reynolds High wrestling team!

The Raiders of coach Casey Taylor dropped a tough 30-25 decision to Erie McDowell Tuesday night at Reynolds, the first home loss for the Raiders since 1993.

The Class AAA Trojans (2-0) last year rallied from a large deficit to beat Class AA Reynolds in Erie, 38-33. On Tuesday, the northerners also rallied from a 25-21 deficit in the final two matches to halt the streak.

Ironically the final bout of the night came down to Reynolds freshman Chase Hauck in his first-ever actual match (he won by forfeit the previous match) against Keegan Fordyce, who just happened to be the son of former Reynolds High mat standout Pat Fordyce.

Charlie Lenox pinned Seth Hogue at 113 to rally McDowell and set up the final match. And then Fordyce edged Hauck, 7-6, at 120 to pull out the victory in a nail-biter.

“There was a lot of pressure on Chase, with the 20-year streak on the line and this being only his first real match,” said Taylor. “I couldn’t be more proud of him, for the way he wrestled and the way he handled himself after the match. He’s a great young kid with a great future.

“We have a lot of young kids. If we had won the match I don’t think we’d have learned as much as we did in losing. I still hate to lose, but we’ll learn more on and off the mat. Now the kids can forget about that streak and the freshmen can now make their mark going forward.”

Taylor praised the work of referees Eric Mount and Andrew Jones for the job they did with a racous crowd and the pressure situation on many close calls.

Several of the individual bouts were close decisions. Austin Moffett (160) scored a pin for Reynolds, while Lenox and Noah Burkhart (138) picked up pins for McDowell.

Reynolds’ Denton Zeronas won by disqualification at 195, while Levi Stoyer (145) won a major decision.

ä Greenville 66, Cochranton 9 — At Greenville Tuesday, the Trojans of coach John Reynolds easily rolled over the Cardinals in the Region 2-AA match to lift their season record to 5-1.

Scoring pins for the Trojans were Jase Paxton (113), Joe Safner (120), Brandon Moss (126), Blake Reynolds (132), Gavin Wilkerson (138), Jacob Rickert (152), Zach Miller (170), Justin Reynolds (182) and Alex Ho (195). Michael Lineman (106) notched a tech fall.

In the highlight match of the evening at 160, Greenville’s Gage Gladysz defeated Robert Boozer, 4-1. Both were Section champions last season at different weights, while Boozer went on to become a state qualifier.
