Roundup: Season-opening Tipoff Tourneys conclude

---- — The numerous weekend basketball and wrestling tournaments involving Mercer County-area teams concluded Saturday. Following are results of winter sports action that was reported to The Herald prior to deadline Saturday:

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Kittanning Tipoff Tourney

Championship

ä Hickory 57, Kittanning 31 —
Led by MVP Nikki Arbanas’ 18-points and 5 rebounds and All-Tourney Team selection Holly Grober’s 18 points and 9 rebounds, the Lady Hornets harvested the crown.

Hickory also won the tourney title 2 years ago, also over Kittanning.

Also for the Lady Hornets (2-0), Nicole Lacava (8), Jenna Placzek (6), Shawna Moore (5) and Brandi Beader (4) contributed to Hickory’s domination on the boards. Megan Chess dished out 4 assists, also.

“We were ready to come out of the gate,” summarized Hickory head coach Jeanette Whitehead.

Franklin Tipoff Tourney

Consolation

ä Kennedy Catholic 51, Holy Angels 30 —
At “The Castle” in Franklin, the Lady Golden Eagles led 16-6 after the opening 8 minutes and cruised past Holy Angels Academy, which is in Buffalo, N.Y.

Alex Ricketts buried 3 treys en route to 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for KC while Courtney Sargent had a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double and Rachel Burns dished out 10 assists.

Jontay Walton scored 18 for Holy Angels.

Mohawk Tipoff

ä Mercer 41, Union 37 —
On Saturday, the Lady M’s led 29-17 at halftime, then held off a Union charge in the second half for the victory.

Mercer (1-1) was led by Alexis Arkwright with 15 points, including a pair of treys. The Heaney sisters had 13 and 11 for Union.

Grove City Kiser Classic

Championship

ä Grove City 41, Cochranton 39 —
Grove City held off a fourth-quarter charge by the Lady Cardinals to win the tourney title.

Grove City led 21-20 at halftime then held Cochranton to only 3 points in a defensive third period. The Redbirds outscored the host club, 16-13, in the final frame, but it wasn’t enough to keep GC from the crown.

Arianna Sprando canned 14 points and Corianne Hyduchak 12 to spark the victory. Kendell Dickson had 11 points and Abby Clutow 10 in the losing effort.

In the consolation game, Berlin Brothersvalley defeated Greenville, 47-26. Rebecca Fagley led Greenville with 10, but a complete boxscore on the game was not submitted.

West Middlesex Tipoff

Championship

ä Slippery Rock 40, West Middlesex 33 —
WM only trailed 35-31 with 2 minutes remaining, but the Lady Rockets’ Haley Angerett sank 5 foul shots to secure the win for SR.

Angerett bucketed 15 for Slippery Rock while Alexis Summers scored 12 for the Ms. Reds.

Angerett and Morgan Siebka were named to the All-Tourney Team for SR, along with WM’s Summers and Kelsey Murray, CP’s Emily Kitchen and Lakeview’s Raegen Fisher.

Consolation

ä Commodore Perry 39, Lakeview 27 —
CP rebounded from Friday’s 47-28 loss to WM to capture the consy contest Saturday.

Katie Powell and Emily Kitchen both scored 12 points for the Lady Panthers while Chelsea Davis scored 9 for Lakeview.

Rocky Grove Tipoff

ä West Forest 39, Reynolds 32 —
At Rocky Grove, the Lady Raiders went 0-for-15 from the floor in the 3rd quarter and dropped to 0-2 with the loss.

Maggie Ringer scored 7 points and grabbed 8 rebounds to lead Reynolds. Also, Morgan McDanel had 8 boards and Rose Stoyer dished out 5 assists.

Jill Wallace fired in 23 points, including 13-of-15 from the charity stripe, for West Forest.

Oil City Tipoff

ä Cranberry 71, Jamestown 14 —
The Lady Muskies (0-2)  fell behind 30-2 after one quarter and never got back into the game. Merryman scored 24 points and Swartz 17 to power the winners.

Non-Tourney Game

ä Brookfield 60, Niles 26 —
At Niles Saturday, the Brookfield Lady Warriors (2-1)  rolled to an easy win. Lauren Hawley led the winners with 15 points while Kayla Boyer and Raeschelle Foster each had 9. Meagan Morris had 9 for Niles (2-3).

All Lady Warrior teams (grades 7-12) have dedicated the season by wearing orange and pink shoe laces to honor the daughters of coach Sean Hammond (Jordyn has leukemia) and John Litman (Adrienne has breast cancer).

Farrell Julius McCoy Tipoff

Championship

ä Kennedy Catholic 63, Greater Latrobe 40 —
At E.J. McCluskey Gymnasium, tournament MVP Jeffrey Thompkins tallied a game-high 24 points to key Kennedy Catholic (2-0), while All-Tourney Team selection Mac Hartman hit for 12. Also, Chris James joined in with a dozen points.

The Golden Eagles erupted for 27 fourth-period points.

Mike Soforik and Ben Havrilla were named to the All-Tourney Team for Greater Latrobe (1-1).

Consolation

ä Farrell 64, Imani Christian Academy 60 —
The host Steelers secured a 14-for-26 performance from the free-throw line, compared with 5-for-7 for Imani Christian.

All-Tourney Team pick Ike Jones forged Farrell (1-1) with 14 points, while teammate Jason Page also was named to the All-Tourney Team. Also, Tyrone Archie added 10 tallies for Farrell.

For Imani Christian Academy (0-2), Brenden Edwards and Khori Hicks hit for 17 and 14 points, respectively, while Plesant pumped in 11.

ä West Middlesex 67, Perry Traditional Academy 54 —
At NeCaHi Fieldhouse, Matt Dogan delivered a 28-point, 12-rebound line to lead the Big Reds’ bounce-back.

Dogan drilled 16 of 23 free throws  — 6 during the decisive 4th frame — as West Middlesex (1-1) went 34 for 49 from the line. Trey Staunch added a 13-point, 10-rebound twin-killing — with 9-for-10 marksmanship from the sin stripe — and Jeremy Jancso joined in  with a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double. Christian Porterfield pumped in 10 points, also.

“We came out much more aggressive, a little more hop in our step; we weren’t complacent,” Middlesex mentor Chad Mild summarized regarding the Reds’ 17-8 first-quarter lead that increased to 35-22 by the break and 50-34 through 3 periods.

For Perry’s Commodores (0-2), Shakeem Cox connected for 16 points and Devin Lyles lent 11, as did Donte Marcus. Cox tossed in a trio of treys.

Fairview Tipoff Tourney

ä Hickory 60, Fairview 35 —
The Hornets bounced back from a loss to Gen. McLane Friday to roll over Fairview. Hickory trailed 13-12 after one period, but outgunned the northerners 19-2 in the second frame to blow the game open.

Matt Votino scored 20 points and added 4 assists and 4 steals to pace the Hornets. Anthony Cannone chipped in with 12 points, 5 assists and 4 steals. Corbin led Fairview with 11 points.

Camb. Springs Englebert Tourney

Championship

ä Northwestern 62, Greenville 50 —
The winning Wildcats went for 42 second-half points en route to the tourney title tilt triumph.

Northwestern notched a half-dozen buckets from beyond the arc. Hites (18), McKeen (16) and Panko (11) paced Northwestern (2-0).

For Greenville, Luke Houpt hit for 16 points and Aaron Emmett added 8 points and 8 rebounds.

The Trojans tallied 16 of 21 attempts from the free-throw line, compared with Northwestern’s 17-for-30 performance.

Indiana Tipoff

ä Indiana 56, Grove City 40 —
With the score tied at 37 after 3 periods, the host team outgunned Grove City, 19-3, in the final frame to pull away for the victory.

Foster Reznor hit double digits for GC (0-2) with 10 points. Carter had 12 points to pace the winners. 

Mercer Tipoff Classic

ä North East 36, Mercer 27 —
The host Mustangs converted only 6 of 16 free-throw attempts and were outscored 16-9 during the decisive 4th period when the missed 3 of 5.

Nate Guiler garnered 14 points for Mercer (1-1), while BlakeBentley buckted 15 for the Grapepickers, who produced 8-for-10 free-throw accuracy.

Ellwood City Tourney

Championship

ä Ellwood City 70, Sharpsville 54 —
Freshman Nick Aloi drained 6 treys en route to 33 points in leading the Wolverines past the Blue Devils in the title tilt.

Matt Young buried a trio of treys and finished with 13 points for EC.

Tyler Luchey poured in 22 points and dished out 6 assists to lead Sharpsville and Kyle Kennedy grabbed 9 rebounds.

Lakeview Tipoff Tourney

Championship

ä Lakeview 62, George Junior Republic 48 —
At Stoneboro, the Sailors (2-0) won the championship of their own tip-off tourney behind a 27-point, 6-rebound, 4-assist, 3-steal performance from tourney MVP Dalton Boggs.

The senior guard raced out of the gates, scoring 9 points in the first quarter on 3-of-5 shooting from downtown before his teammates caught up.

Classmate Coty Gander finished with an 11-point, 11-rebound, 4-assist, 2-steal effort, while Casey Greggs -- an all-tourney selection -- also finished in double figures with 12 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. Brandon Rice tacked on 12 points.

George Junior (1-1) was led by all-tourney selection Nafis Brown, who finished with a team-high 20 points, 4 rebounds and 4 steals, while fellow all-tourney selection O’shay Toney and Quamere Boggs evenly split 18 points -- Information submitted by Herald sports correspondent Corey J. Corbin.

Hickory Invitational

Six Mercer County matmen clained titles at the season opening 16-team HIT tournament in Hermitage Saturday.

Jamestown had three champions in Faris Messia (113), Jonas Reaugh (126) and Nick Floch (132). Hickory notched a pair of winners in Justin Walter (106) and Joey Hines (195). Commodore Perry’s Tyler Osborne copped the 152 crown.

Kane won the team title with 195 points, followed by Smethport with 179 and Jamestown 174.5. Hickory was 9th, Slippery Rock 10th, West Middlesex 13th and Commodore Perry 14th.

Locals on the All-Academic Team (highest GPA in weight class) were: 145 - Zane Chimiak (Comm. Perry); 160 - Alex Mozes (Comm. Perry); 285 - Gary Facemyer (Hickory).
