HIGH SCHOOL WINTER SPORTS ROUNDUP: Sharon girls edge WM

MERCER COUNTY — Sharon High girls basketball team prepared for the postseason Wednesday night, pushed to the limit at West Middlesex. In a 4th-frame free-throw  shooting contest, the Lady Tigers triumped, 58-56.

Sharon (10-2, 15-7) sank 21 of 38 freebies, scoring all 11 of its 4th-period points from the line. Tanayja Sanders secured an 18-point, 14-rebound, 6-blocked shots line, Mallory Torr tallied 14, Kelsie McGranahan grabbed 9 rebounds and Maggie Torr dished out 3 assists.

For West Middlesex (4-8, 9-13), Morgan Atternolt annexed a 20-point, 9-rebound outing, Noelle Murray mustered 12 markers and 4 assists, and Allie Staunch snagged 13 rebounds. The Ms. Reds recorded 20-for-40 shooting from the sin stripe.

WM’s Jen Drda was feted on Senior Night.

ä Youngstown East 50, Farrell 34 — At E.J. McCluskey Gymnasium in a make-up game, the visitors rolled. Angel Muns mustered 14 markers, Labreah Hilton hit for 11, as did Courtney Turner, and Znayia Brown bucketed 10.

On Senior Night, Whitney Murray made 15 markers for Farrell (6-15). Murray, Key-Asia Oatis, Bria Gambill and Janee Avery were feted. 

ä Cochranton 68, Lakeview 27 — At Cochranton, the 2013 D-10 Class A runnerup Lady Redbirds’ (16-4),  inter-region rout was led by Madison Bernarding, who bucketed a game-high 20 points, while Kendall Dickson drilled 13 and Morghan Egli ended with 10.

Lakeview fell to 5-17.

BOYS BASKETBALL

ä Conneaut Area 57, Sharpsville 40 — At Linesville, the host Eagles erupted for 38 second-half points en route to the win.

Litwin led CASH with a game-high 24 points, while Williams went for 15. Kyle Kennedy collected 16 points and Sage Barringer bucketed 12 for Sharpsville (8-13).

ä Wilmington 72, Greenville 70 (OT) — At Greenville Tuesday, the teams were knotted at 25-all at halftime. Greenville went up 52-43 after 3, but the ’Hounds outscored the Trojans 22-13 in the 4th to force OT, then posted a 7-5 edge in the extra session.

Jordan Smith scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Hounds (7-4, 12-9), Spencer DeMedal bucketed 16, Rocco Fagan 15 and Jesse Hilliard added 13.

Aaron Emmett led the Trojans (2-9, 8-12) with 19 points, Trey VanAken scored 18, Tyler Fattman 14 and Trent McErlane added 11.

ä Commodore Perry 54, VisionQuest 45 — At Sheakleyville Tuesday night, the host Panthers prevailed in the Region 1-A affair. Overcoming an 8-point 2nd stanza, the Panthers poured in 30 second-half points.

For Coach Jon Hildebran and Commodore Perry (3-4, 10-10), Jeremiah Small scored 20 points and Tanner Hildebran hit for 12.

VisionQuest (4-4, 5-14) was led by Jessie Robinson, who rifled in a game-high 22 points. He was the Eagles’ lone double-figure scorer.

ä Brookfield 75, Champion 47 — At Warren on Tuesday, the visiting Warriors (11-7) held a slim 11-10 lead after the opening 8 minutes, but outscored the Golden Flashes (1-18) 21-8 in the 2nd quarter to pull away.

Nate Johnson rifled in 25 points to lead Brookfield while Davon Sims and Marc Kraml scored 11 and Jamar Tarver added 10.

Michael Turner and Lucas Nasanti had 14 points each for Champion.

ä Saegertown 87, Jamestown 61 — At Saegertown Tuesday, the visiting Muskies fell to the Panthers in the inter-region tilt.

Scott Sada (20), Mitchell Wood (17), Tyler Walters (17) and Jason Amy (12) sparked Saegertown (8-13).

Kyle Melton led Jamestown (1-16) with 20 points, Brian Livingston bucketed 16 and Todd Depree added 11 markers.

WRESTLING

ä Franklin 43, Hickory 27 — In a recent match, the Hornets bowed. Notching falls for Hickory were Justin Walter (120) and John Sims (160). Picking up pins for Franklin were Zach Sharrer (132), Hunter Cook (152) and Nathan Miller (195).
